Boiler Annual Service

Options
Hi everyone, new to the forums. What a great site !!
My boiler is due for an annual service. I just wanted to know please what I should expect to pay for this.
I've seen prices ranging from £ 52.00 to £ 105.00.
Also, once the boiler service has been done, do I get a certifiacte confirming this ?
Also, if there is anyone who would be willing to do this at a fair price in the Leeds area, please could they email me.
Thanks

  • You might be better off going for a plan with Powergen or someone. I pay £14 per month. In that price I get an annual service and if anything goes wrong with the system I don't have to fork out again. My system is only 2 years and I have had to call them out to it 3 times already to replace seals so I reckon I'm quids in. Shop around and see what you can get.

There are quite a lot of threads on the pros and cons of Gas boiler Service plans - BG is the big player in this field.

If you look under Gas and Electricity you will find several threads with a variety of views of this service. If you can find a good reliable Corgi plumber you will probably be best off with him, but most of us can't find such a beast so opt for the expensive BG service as a form of insurance policy - much like the post above.

I have a baxi combi condensing boiler, now 16 months old. I decided that I wanted it to have the full service every year and I also wanted a boiler insurance contract. I got both via baxi approx £85 for the insurance contract and £85 for the annual service.
BG might be the big player but I wanted more than an annual safety check and I also wanted a specialist engineer. I got both and the monthly cost is approx £13.75

I have British Gas Homecare 200, which entitles me to a free annual boiler and central heating service and and free repairs (usually next day) if anything goes wrong. This costs £13.75 pcm.

However, as my house is rented out, I also have my hob checked once a year (the only other Gas Appliance I have), and a Landlords' Gas Safety Certificate issued, which costs an extra £10.92 pcm.

I think this is a good deal as I am 1500 miles away in another country and would not know where to start finfding a CORGI registered engineer!

BG do carry out service as well as giving it an annual safety check . They carry out an "Annual Safety and Maintenance Inspection" - read their booklet for full details. The latest boilers have very little to inspect and/or adjust. A simple measure of your combustion efficiency is all that is required

Bear in mind that the BG scheme, which is similar in cost to yours, covers everything in the Central Heating and Hot water system. Tank, Radiators Pump etc.

As for 'specialist engineers' are you implying BG are not so qualified? You have no guarantee that your service will be better or worse than BG.

Also what incentive do BG have in not carrying out their service correctly? If anything goes wrong they have to come out again and repair it at their expense.

can someone give me a bit of advice on this homecare, we have just bought our flat from our landlord and the last time the BG guy came out(our landlord had the homecare cover) he said it was impossible to get parts for our boiler anymore and recommended replacement, now is it worth getting the homecare. It is an old boiler but having just bought the flat it needs to keep going till we can afford to replace.

BG will not offer you a contract if your CH system is unserviceable or they are unable to obtain parts for it.

Some people opinion that BG use this as a ploy to get you to replace the boiler(and give them the task). On the other hand there are plenty of people who still get their 20+ year old boiler serviced without problems by BG- mine is 18 years old

thanks for that, might give them a call:) but we certainly won't be buying a new boiler from them anytime soon
  • Replace the boiler as soon as you can and British Gas will then cover it (assuming it is fitted correctly).
