Windows Media Player can't play DVD

Hi

Trying to watch a dvd and have got the following error message C00D1163:-

Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.

I haven't tried playing DVD's before, have tried a couple of different dvd's but they won't play either.

Any ideas how I can locate the correct driver for my video card. My laptop runs on Windows XP and I haven't a clue what type of video card I have.

Grateful if someone can come to my rescue!

Many thanks
Terri

I've [ almost ] never found anything that Media Player Classic will not play providing it has the correct codec(s).

However without [ in the particular ] knowing which format the DVD file is and which version of WMP you are using, it could be :

    - digital copy protection via WMP, or more likely ;
    - you don't have the correct codec to execute the file.

I'm assuming your O/S is 32 bit, if it is download and install K-lite from : http://download.cnet.com/K-Lite-Mega-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10794603.html

If it is 64 bit get this one instead : http://www.codecguide.com/klcp_64bit.htm

    @ Terrysdelight

Those are the two options that usually get suggested for this problem.
    Either
Install the correct codec for Windows Media Player
    Or
Install a media player such as VLC that comes with all its codecs already there.

    It's your call.

It will if you set VLC as the default player.

    vlc is worth the download.
[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that
