Windows Media Player can't play DVD

Use of the VLC media player would sidestep the issue rather neatly, but doesn't solve the problem itself. Furthermore, if this is a case of conflicting codecs adding more (as K-Lite does) is likely to make things worse.0

I'm pretty sure that "DeCSS" decoding is sometimes required to be installed for DVD playback as not all player software has this built in, especially "non commercial" software.0

@ boliston
VLC comes with 'libdvdcss' included.

Right click on the file > Open With > Choose Program > VLC. Tick the box to "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" > OK.
Any file with the same extension will then open directly with VLC.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0 -

in XP open "my computer" , click "tools" then "folder option" then look under the "file types" tab
if you scroll down to the appropriate file type (eg .mov, .avi .mp4 ) etc you can hit the "change" default button for individual file types and point it towards vlc media player instead of windows media player0
