Donating money to charity

My friend is doing some sort of marathon for charity (Marie Curie Cancer Care) to raise money, and I would like to sponsor her. I would like to donate £1 or £2 from my account.

Would the bank block this transaction, due to the 'unusual' amount, etc...?

Would I get an invoice sent to my home address to say that I paid? By the way, it asks for my address, as well as my card details.

why would you expect an invoice. You dont get invoices for donations.

It would cost Marie Curie more than you are donating even to send you a confirmation that they have received it.

They have to cover Typists, furniture, office space, pens, computers, rent, rates, stationery, telephone lines, telephone calls, not to mention time or postage.

I really, really wouldnt bother asking for or expecting an invoice/confirmation.

Now if you were going to donate a tenner that would be worth it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

How come they want my address?

I am donating a small amount, as my friend has almost met his target. My amount will finish it off for him.
  • They will use your address to verify your card and also for giftaid if you authorise giftaid.
£34,547 (Dec 07); Current debt: £zilch (Debt free December 2010)
    Sealed Pot #389 (2010=£133)
  • If you are a taxpayer then giving your name and address means they can get tax relief on the donation.

To others it does not matter does it the size of the donation?

The charity is automatically using Gift Aid.

Are you asking a question or making a statement there?

If it is a statement of fact, then that confirms why they want your address. They need it for HMRC.

They shouldn't automatically use Gift Aid, you have to agree to it. You are only allowed to Gift Aid something if you have paid more in income tax this tax year than Gift Aid will be donating. If you tick the Gift Aid box when you haven't paid enough tax, well, that's not good.

    .....I think.

And if you're worried that the amount is a bit low, why not donate £5 or something? People donate to charity all the time.

They want your address to canvas you for further donations at a later date. It is my principle never to give my address to a charity.

Sorry, I mean 'agree' to the gift aid. :o

I have been over taxed in my salary. Why is it not good to agree to the Gift Aid when I haven't paid enough tax?

I am donating a small amount, as the target amount is almost been reached. My £1 or £2 will finish it off, and meet the target.

The address is a compulsary field to fill in.

So that means they will send me a letter about further donations in the future?
