My elderly relative rang me earlier (he is in his 70s) to say he is having problems with his computer -he was really upset and lives several hundred miles away from me :(

After a lot of discussion he said to me, "and the computer keeps telling me it has 580 viruses but wants me to pay to get rid of them and when I click to get rid of the message, it just comes up again, Im going round in circles"

That rang a bell

SO, this is that rotten spoof virus thing isnt it - that comes up in a bubble pretending its your anti virus and once you click on it you cant get rid of it.

I remember there is a fix to get rid, can anyone help me out here please so I can tell cousin.

    Download and run Malwarebytes.
Get him to post the log on here (if you can) and get one of the techies to have a look at it.

Hi bless, but I told him to try that and he cant understand how to copy or post. He basically manages to just use emails and stuff and thats it.

Would antispyware work? Or is it a lot more complicated than that to get rid of please.

OK. Not wishing to be rude, but can he download, update and run it?

The free version of superantispyware would be a start but as rmg says would he manage to run it okay?

Is there anyone local to him that could help or at least take instructions from here?

Hi, Ive told him to download and run the antispyware. That it will give a list of bad entries and to delete them when it does. Fingers crossed he can manage it. Hi, no is only son lives in Asia and I think all his mates think he is a whiz kid being able to do emails :)

    Thanks for your care.

Good point, never thought of that.
But doesn't mean downloading and installing stuff anyway?

tell him to get take it into a pc repair shop because no offence intended but it seems that neither of you are capable of doing what you are asking. At least by getting it done professionally you can't make mistakes and make things worse
