BA win - Victory for common sense

TU's are there to protect the workers they represent. Sadly they don't always see the bigger commercial picture. In this case that is the one that their workers (who they should be representing) are currently working (for above average marker pay as already pointed out) for a company that is in serious financial trouble in an industry that always struggles in a recession due to huge fixed costs of operation inheremt in that industry.
unless some agreement is come to quickly then they will also lose any public support they may have and people will (and are) vote with their feet and use alternative airlines. We are going for a short trip next month and I have used BA for it before even though they are not the cheapest. As things stand there was no way I was going to risk using them and so I have booked with another (cheaper airline)
In a recession where people are losing their jobs and companies are closing down hand over fist it makes very little commercial sense to be pushing for unrealistic and financially unachievable solutions
Not totally unsurprising as some still refer to the 70's as the good ol' days of TU's with far too much power0 -
First there was this:I wouldn't expect to hear anything until next Tuesday http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8552049.stm
, which would mean a 16th March start to any action. The anticipation is a 10 day strike (to force all cabin crew to be on a roster at one point or another), however the contingency plans from BA make it sound like distruption may be less than many anticipate.
Then came (last night):Noon tomorrow they will (my insert) call the strike.
You are funny. Reminds me of the man outside the football ground when I was a lad with the sandwich board reading 'The end of the world is nigh'.
In a former life did you ever work as the soothsayer on the Titanic?

I'm getting somewhat confused by your slightly incoherent posting now - what point are you actually trying to raise ? You've quoted my posts which do nothing but highlight that the union let deadline after deadline pass without actually setting strike dates, which to me suggests an element of failure in their campaign.
A while back you posted :-In fact, Guardian reports already suggest that BA has moved somewhat
To which I replied that they clearly haven't, particularly because they've outright rejected the unions nonsense counter offer. So, I must ask again, (seeing as you are apparently pro-union); where can they union win in this current situation ?

So I wasn't the only one who thought that point made no sense what so ever?
Are you a unite spokesmen by any chance?0 -
I grew out of assuming BA was the "best" choice for me as a flyer a long time ago. Their frequent flyer program is stingy compared with other carriers on the routes I fly and I prefer the style of service offered by other carriers. I have flown BA in the past but looked for other carriers when the BA/ Virgin dirty tricks campaign first started -now I fly them once in a blue moon. My background for years was the travel industry so I do think I have a viewpoint that has some knowledge of how the airline business works.
I do find this reduction on long haul flights of one member of CC to be acceptable-many workers are doing more work for the same money at the moment-it's the price of recession. Futhermore I think striking at holiday times is short sighted-it gets the most publicity -yes although financially it hits BA less hard as at holiday time business travel with high yield and more profitable fares are at their lowest level of volume. It also sets public opinion against the staff.
BA staff did themselves no favours when some union members called various radio stations discussing the Christmas action to say their needs were more important than the public's Christmas plans. I heard a few calls and found their arrogence breathtaking.
I'm left with no sympathy for workers who are paid above the industry average -yet have higher staffing levels than most airlines on flights. This is equalization and an effort to stop BA losing money and enable them to survive. We all like the good times but when times are tough (and they are tough for ALL airlines at the moment) the responsible worker looks at the big picture -I honestly feel the union needs to back off and save their efforts for battles than 1 Make sense and 2 They can win.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Strikes announced for March 20 - 22 and 27 - 30 inclusive. However, there will be a(nother) ballot in the meantime, the result of which could see the strike cancelled.
Thankfully I am not affected - I fly on the 31st. However I do now need to make plans that I should have been able to make weeks ago. Hope this does not cause too much disruption for others?
I think someone on this thread needs to eat a big old slice of humble pie!Gone ... or have I?0 -
AS I posted in the other thread - it's the 24th for me. Just worried about involuntary downgrades due to pulling flights together due to planes being out of place post-strike.Legal team on standby0
