Thanks for the replys. Think it's a kind of oil as isn't sticky to touch like paint would be. He's been ok the last few days so will keep an eye on him, tried the oil and it's helped a bit but due to him being light ginger in parts he looks a bit like a dalmation cat!!..Thanks
  • we used fairy liquid when ours came inside covered in oil - I'm guessing he was under a car too.

However nothing saved all the sheets and carpets he rolled on first

Cats will lick off the residue of any cleaning product used on them so I'd be inclined to stick with vegetable oil or a pet shampoo. Fairy liquid, baby shampoo and baby wipes are not designed to be eaten!

true... but I told the vet that I'd used a tiny amount of fairy liquid and he didn't comment... also my cats had a lamp shade collar on for nearly three weeks and I've been cleaning that with baby wipes (he licks it) and also his bottom and the vet had no problem with that ... infact he just knodded as I told him what I'd been up to.

not a dig at you firefox- just a post to calm any panic if the OP has already used fairy liquid!

I'd be very impressed if anyone's vet was 100% up to date on exactly what chemicals are found in each household cleaning product, given the range available in Tesco. At least one kitten has died from exposure to one particular chemical found in some antibacterial products:

I'm not trying to panic anyone I'm trying not to encourage anyone to following the advice on this thread in future. There are products on the market designed for cleaning our pets safely, IMO we should be advising people to use these.
