I have grown some shallots. Most are lovely but a few of them have a rottensmalling brown layer or layers. Does anyone know why?

Hi all hope the gardening is going well. Spent a lovely afternoon in the greenhouse sewing seeds and sorting things out. Then I looked at my old pansies and found they had gone to seed. I had never done it before but I have collected about 500 seeds from about 8 seed heads. Really exciting and easier than I thought. I am definitely going to do it again!

Once the seed pods dry out in the sun and open they are ready for scraping into an envelope to be kept dry for next year.

Going to work out how to save other seeds now!

I posted on here a little while ago that pepper plant wasnt doing anything and had come to the conclusion that it wasnt being pollinated (it's indoor). Well I kind of ignored it for a while I watered it everyday but didnt really look at it, I decided to keep it as its quite a nice plant to was happy for it to stay. Well it now has 4 peppers growing on it!!!! One is about 6 inches long and the others about 2 or 3 inches long. I have no idea what type of pepper they are as i bought the plant for 50p from a car boot sale. They are currently green and look like fat chilli peppers so I shall leave them for now and see what happens.

Hopefully I will get some photos later to put on and someone can help with what they are.

:rotfl:I know a lot of nuns and even they would find that hilarious:rotfl:

In other news, my brassicas have been decimated by caterpillers and i did cover the bed with scaffold netting. The slugs have been a pain in the brassica bed too. Next year i will have to come up with a better plan

Most likely Jalapeño peppers. They are often later and mine indoors keep producing into January, then the leaves drop off, new ones grow and you get a head start next year;)
Dont over water in the winter months.

I think scaffold netting mesh size is too big, the butterlies fold their wings and crawl through.

My cabbages got attacked last year so I used very fine 0.6mm enviromesh this year,
It was a bit expensive, but I have had no problem at all with butterflies or catterpilars this year.

This is the stuff CLICKY but I only paid about £10 from a garden center.

All still going well in the Garden and Allotment, made better by our first really big fall of rain on Tuesday, it rained all day and when I was up the Allotment yesterday it just looked so green and lush and the ground was lovely and wet. First really heavy significant rainfall that we've had since May!!

Made the most of the soft earth by getting some serious weeding done, worked my way round the whole plot so leeks bed done, brassicas bed done, all round the sweetcorns, celery, fennel etc. Really pleased with how it all looks now.

Picked a couple more courgettes and also a load of plums from my Tree. Looked up my HFW Yearbook for recipes and made a Plum compote which has an extra recipe from the extra syrup which he recommends using for a sweet & spicy dipping sauce - very pleased with the results.

Sown some seeds this week for Pak Choi and also some baby turnips to try and keep any spaces filled up.;)
