Lost in post - who is responsible?

insured
I have just sold something from ebay. I posted it on Monday and got proof of posting. It has not arrived yet.
If it does not arrive, who takes the hit?
Does the seller normally refund, or is proof of posting enough?
What is the norm here?

If it was only posted Monday I would ask the buyer to give it a few more days to be delivered, RM do have delays...
I assume it was not sent tracked?0 -
Thanks all. No it was not sent tracked. I only found out yesterday it had not got there. Will give it a couple more days.
I did say in the advert that proof of posting would be obtained so that purchaser could claim compensation if necessary. Does that make a difference?
Will RM compensate me for the item even though I did not pay for insurance, only proof of posting?0 -

It makes no difference if you put that in your listing. It is still your responsibility I'm afraid. You will have to refund if it doesnt arrive in a couple more days then claim back from RM. You can claim up to £39 on normal postage but you have to provide evidence of the cost of the item to you, not what you sold it for.taken on second job + £160 per month
rejigged my bills + £190 per month
got cheaper car to run + £40 per month
got two liftsharers + £120 p/m
given up smoking since 31/12/2008 + 180 p/m0 -

The statement in your auction serves no purpose except to put some buyers off and to possible encourage others who may consider you a bit naive.
Yes your certificate of posting means you will be able to claim loss of item up to a total value of £39 as long as it wasn't an item that is not covered, like jewellery, tickets vouchers etc. You will need to wait 15 working days though before you cna make your claim, but your buyer will probably expect their refund well before that.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Thanks for this.
I think I have been a bit naive. For some reason I did not believe that he did not receive the item, then I looked at the feedback he has left for others and it appears other items have not been "received".

These are not isolated, but repeated every day.
'Definate', 'Aswell', 'Rediculous', 'Payed'...and the best of all 'Could Of'. How can anyone think that 'Could Of' can actually mean anything. You may as well write 'Could Zebra' for all the sense it makes.0 -

I always worry about this when people have strange terms in their auctions, I wonder if it attracts chancers. It certainly attracts scammers with high value auctions where sellers offer insurance as an extra as they then know the seller will send untracked if they don't pay it.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
