Ive just had some quite bad problems with my hotmail account, it seems as though someone is using my account to send spam from it somehow?! I get quite a bit of spam myself and am thinking of moving from hotmail to a different provider. My current hotmail account will just be used to entere competitions I guess.
What is the best free email provider for me to use long term?

do you get spam which claims it is coming from your account
it is probably not from you just a spoofed header - change your password just incase though and do a virus scan
google mail is good0 -
I am very pleased with Google mail too.WHOOOOSHHHHHHHHH……..
Blimey what was that ?
That was your life mate

Another +1 for Gmail/Google mail!
Been using it since 2004, with no problems whatsoever. Great spam blocking, good reliability, searchable emails, lots of space... love it!0 -
+1 for google mail with a twist. I signed up for google apps. Means all mail can be directed to my own domain (e.g. myname@mydomain.com) without having to spend any money on hosting (just have to pay to keep the domain name registered no more than a tenner a year or so). A little hassle to set-up, but once done I've never looked back.0

No I get spam from other accounts, such as today from an apparent HSBC account!
I know that my account is sending spam because I get returned emails to me saying that filters from other accounts have blocked them!
I have changed my p/w nothing happened. Also done loads of checks such as virus, nothing changed either... Google mail does it for me, can be a touch slow to load at times but has an excelent email search facility and there are no adverts flashing at you all over the page.0

Google mail is fine - as long as you don't mind Google storing all your e-mail forever and analysing the contents so as to target advertising.0

The returned mail gets to you because someone put your address on it and sent it from elsewhere. The mail definitely did not come from your Hotmail account.
As you have found out - a waste of time. The original mails do not originate from your accountI have changed my p/w nothing happened. Also done loads of checks such as virus, nothing changed either...0 -
Yes there has always been debate over the privacy issues with Google mail but it's up to the individual to decide if they can accept it or not.Google mail is fine - as long as you don't mind Google storing all your e-mail forever and analysing the contents so as to target advertising.
As for the advertising (at the moment) it's only one line at the top of the page and it looks pretty insipid.0 -
Unfortunately, the debate only applies if users know about it. Most newbies don't - and certainly won't understand the potential implications.
Incidentally, I'm not sure where you get the 'one line at the top' from. It is actually a series of targeted ads that appear down the side panel of individual e-mails and they are very precisely targeted, using postcode and contents analysis, including data mined from non-Google related purchase confirmations.
It may, or may not, matter. But people should know how much they are handing over to Google.0
