Replacing my Nokia nk702 but keeping SIM

Options
Hi there,

I have an old Nokia nk702 with Orange and I am on the Virgin OVP tariff (and obviously no longer in contract). My usage is VERY low indeed.

Now, after nearly 9 years of service, the nk702 is becoming unreliable (regularly won't turn on properly) and so it needs to be replaced. I want to keep my current SIM and, given my usage, I am likely to go for a second-hand phone. Just to make sure I don't do summat silly can you confirm or answer the following?

The replacement phone will need to be either on the Orange network or unlocked. Correct?

Will my current SIM fit pretty much any non-3G phone?

As the SIM is not PAYG do I need to avoid PAYG phones?

Are there any other issues I should be aware of?

Ta muchly!

  • Thanks for the info Browntoa.

Just checked the Virgin site, looks like that one is out of stock at the moment, but I'll keep my eyes open.

I too am on OVP Virgin tariff. The SIM card came with a Nokia 3330 and when I bought a new phone, I called Orange CS to get GPRS and photo messaging (MMS) activated. You will probably have to do this.

The SIM card will work in any Orange locked (branded) non-3g phone or any unlocked/SIM free phone.

It won't work in other providers' phones like Virgin Mobile unless the phone is unlocked. Virgin Mobile will provide an unlock code after you have topped up by £30. Note they don't charge you anything, so you could sell that SIM card on.
  • Interesting point about activating GPRS and MMS, but considering that my bills so far this year total 14p (yes that's PENCE) I don't think I will be considering those technologies. :rotfl:

    Cheers DD
  • I kept my eyes open and I bought a Nokia 1101 from the Virgin web site. And thanks to another post I saw, by logging in to the account I set up when I bought my folks a phone a few years back, I got it for £14.99 and it came with a £10 top-up!

OK, so it's going to take me a looong time to spend my way through the credit, but when I do I'll unlock the phone and transfer over my Orange SIM.

Thanks very much for the advice both on this thread and others.

If you don't use your Orange card for a long time, won't it deactivate?

I have used an Orange sim after more than a year so it should be okay :)
  • Well I am 'billed' monthly rather than PAYG but it's a good point. The nk702 still works, allbeit unreliably, so I can check my voicemail every now and then, or make a quick call to my new phone.

I'm sure Orange would like to be rid of me as it costs them more to send out my monthly statement than they get in income, so I musn't give them the opportunity. :D

I got a nokky 3510i for £5 on eBay - the 3510i is much better than the 3510. You should find plenty there, either unlocked or locked to Orange. Make sure you check each seller's postage rates - can vary wildly!

  • Hey Trixxie, I ended up getting a Nokia 1101 from the Virgin website. I had my eyes on a few ebay items but, as you say, P&P can seriously affect how much of a bargain you are getting. I think a lot of people assume that 'cos it's on ebay, it must be cheaper - not so!

In the end my £15 phone (with £10 credit included!) was delivered at no charge the next day by a motorbike courier. What's even better is that I can text my dad until end of September for free. Now all I have to do is convince him to turn his mobile on more often!
