in Credit cards
I have a Tesco Credit card. They have imposed a £12 charge because: My card was due to be paid by 4th Feb 2010 I paid in full in cash on the 29th Jan and spent £130 on the card on 3rd Feb {in their store by the way}. They say that the cash payment was not cleared untill the 4th Jan {due date } but because I spent £130 on the 3rd I went over my limit. I had a letter from them back in Nov 09 saying what my limit was, but dont have that anymore and am not sure what it was. They NEVER say anywhere on the bills what my limit is ,or how much spend I have left. I have two other credit card companys who both do say what the limit is and I have never gone over. What can I do, like most people I simple cannot afford this.

Sounds odd that you have a card, do not know the limit and never thought to ask.0

I did previously know the limit, but thought it was higher than it obviously was. Does that excuse tescos never reminding me?0

Does it excuse you not bothering to find out what the limit is before making a large transaction?
It's up to the customer to make sure they stay within the limit & you can only do that by finding out what your limit is.0 -
All a bit weird. My Tesco Clubcard Credit Card statement shows the credit limit quite clearly on each statement. Having said that, I don't think that's the issue as whether or not they "remind" you, you must know there is a limit.
The point is - you say you cleared the balance in cash in good time. Seems to me you left it a bit tight (there was a weekend in between). You paid cash on Friday and used the card on Wednesday. And how did you pay the cash (was it within banking hours?) and what do they say about how long it takes cash payments to reach them?
I think you should just phone them up - politely suggest that at in the circumstances they refund the £12 as in fact you had given them cleared funds in advance and that a £12 fee is a bit disproportionate. Seems you had gone over the limit by no more than £130, perhaps less.
Suggest you don't tell them "What can I do, like most people I simple cannot afford this" because the obvious answer is to be more careful if £12 is that difficult.0 -
i have to agree with chattychappy that you should know your credit limits and i feel you should also know approx balances and how much you have available to spend. My statement also tells me quite clearly what my credit limit is and it also states on the back when paying at the bank to allows 4 full working days for payments to clear you paid on a friday and spent on a wednesday so you did not allow enough time.
if you call them and are very nice they may let you off its worth a try but in the future i would read your statements more carefully so you dont get anymore charges.
also it might help you if you sign up to there online service i always use it to check my payment has been recieved it might help you to manage your account and keep a check of your balance it also tells you your credit limit
good luck with calling them hope they return your charge0 -
Yes the credit limit is stated at the top right of every bill.
It is also stated online along with the available balance.0
