Recommend a car for under £2000

I am looking to buy a car for around £2000 and was wondering what sort of age car should I be expecting to get for my money.

I am a new driver but would prefer a bigger car like an astra or something but not sure what kind of age to expect.

Any advice would be great.

When a looked a few months ago then I reckoned that Mondeos were really cheap for what they were.

Yeah, thanks for a unhelpful post!

I have looked on the likes of autotrader but it's not very helpful when one person is selling a 2000 reg vectra for £1800 and another is selling a 2003 reg vectra for £1800.

I just want some advice as to what to reasonably expect so that I don't end up buying something that's riddled with faults because of it being cheaper than it should be.

Also as a first time car owner, I thought it'd be helpful drawing off other peoples experience.

As much as I hate them myself, you can get a lot of Mondeo for your money.... I would definitely fork out for a mechanic to give it a thorough going over though!
    Starting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs

    30lb lost of 30lb by June 2012 :j:j:j (80lb overall goal)

  • Can I ask...why do people hate mondeos? (a genuine question).

Unfortunately, I don't know a mechanic so how would I go about getting one to go over a car I'm intending to buy?

    Thanks again

i don't. i would have one, plenty around, cheap for spares, good specs available at low prices.

i think some folk hate them as they are so popular, they get tagged as repmobiles. i wouldn't let it worry me,also some folk just don't like fords.

Of course it is this thread has been running the last few days

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2280235

    or just search!!
  • I'd divide it by 4 and go to the auctions. If anythings sitting around £300, place a bid.

Of course, if that thread actually answered my question, it would be helpful but as it doesn't have any suggestions about what age of cars I can expect for the money no, it's not useful!!!
