You have already said you have reasons to avoid Bank of Scotland, and thats fine, but I'd just like to say that I bank with them and find their level of service excellent. OK I use the account they provide for under 16's but no other bank would provide me with a debit card, never mind an online banking service :)

Have always found staff extremely pleasant and helpful in the branch as well as in their call centre (had to call them today regarding fraud, see my easymobile thread in this same board) and they dealt with my situation very well, offering excellent advice.

Anyway, theres my "pro bank of scotland" rant, take no notice of it :D

I bank with the Royal Bank of Scotland, and they are more than helpful. When I was a student with an overdraft they were parent-like. Free Jam doesn't last forever OP.

This is what narks me, right.

The account is ace. Huge free overdraft. Great.

The fact that they keep b*ggering it up by accident is not ace. They freely admit it's their mistake.

They advertised their account as providing such and such benefits, then took these benefits away without warning. Griff, if your bank started to refuse you chequebooks and debit cards without warning or explanation, you'd be p*ssed too, no?

Have recently changed to Co-Op, we used to be Natwest customers for fifteen years but since they were taken over by RBS things have gone rapidly downhill.
We have no Co-Op branch by us so opened the account and do most things online. They have been absolutely first class so far, no glitches at all. If I need to actually visit a branch I use the post office for counter services. The Post Office staff are much friendlier and more helpful than bank staff imo, they are quicker and actually know what they are doing. You can also do loads of other stuff at the post office at the same time. (As an added bonus, the Co-Op are also very green and ethical)

But how many minutes do waste at the PO saying No you do not want their travel insurance car insurance pet insurance personal loans credit cards telephone calls etc etc before you actually get to pay anything in!!

    In my opinion, FirstDirect ROCKS!!!!

Though I normally wont comment on competitors of my empoyers or pass comment on my own employers for that matter.....

Wouldnt touch them with a barge pole. They messed up... their telephone advisor admitted they had messed up, the I was passed to a manager (not a team leader because the money involved was above their authority level to refund) who said it would be credit to my account and show the next day and it didnt.

Long story short, "senior" management went back on their middle managements admitting liability and not only did I have to issue court proceedings (at which they admitted liability) but then had to get bailifs involved as they failed to pay the court judgement.

Got a letter of apology and a goodwill gesture of £50, and a promise it won't happen again.

Also got a letter informing me of the charges they have applied due to my "unauthorised borrowing" ... I will wait with interest to see if the charges materialise ...!

sorry to hear you had trouble. a lot of people on this forum do bank with them, and apart from the imminent (apparently) £10 monthly curent account charge from Jan, they really are very good. in general.
