Device manager > if you hunt around properties for various devices I think there is a tick box to "allow this device to wake up the PC". Network card is probably the prime suspect but there might be others, you could work your way thru removing the ability of devices to wake up the machine until you get the one causing the problem0

You need to go to your device manager and find the network adaptors, controller.
Then in properties select advanced then disable the wke up on magic packet and wake up on pattern match. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks, I think I have been using Sleep when I should probably be using Hibernate. Will try that and see how I get on.0

is there a device wide "do not allow this device to wake up the machine" option? might be worth taking wake up abilities from your motherboard and graphics card too.... no logical reason I can see why but something I found on google suggested it and it won't do any harm

/bump
managed to fix my power problems over the weekend finally, there is a DOS command built into windows called powercfg
open a command windows (as administrator) and typr "powercfg /?" to bring up a list of options
"powercfg -requests" will list anything stopping your computer going to sleep
"powercfg -requestoverride" will let you add exemptions to tell the computer to ignore certain things and shut down anyway
what i think you need is something like "powercfg -wake" (check the exact one from the list) which will log what the last thing to cause your PC to wake from sleep mode was...should help you track down the culprit
