why wont my p/c stay in sleep mode

I'm not very techie but want to conserve pwr and put p/c running vista in sleep mode. From the power button I can select sleep mode. It appears to go into mode ok, but then after about 2 mins cycles itself up again. I did go to settings options and its on the dell recommended; turn off display 30mins put computer to sleep 1 hour. Whatever I do it seems determined to recylcle itself up:eek: Am running macafee, should this interfere?

Not sure if macafee interferes (as I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole), but ido know that sometimes when I put my pc to sleep I knock my mouse as I get up and this wakes the flipping thing up agian. Do yuo have a cat or anything that may have jumped on teh keyboard etc?

  • Hi, no, did think of that but do shut all programs down and mouse not touched. Happens every time, but only on this one computer our other two are fine.
  • Why not use hibernate mode it takes a little longer to restart but uses 0 power if you power off.

Is your computer connected to a router thats always on?
If this is the case then its probably your NIC responding to a wake up packet.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Are yes it is, thanks penrhyn. Would like to try hibernate mode, how do I activate that pls?
  • If uou look at control power/options you can set the default power button to hibernate and also do the same for sleep time etc.As for your original post also on the sleep mode there is an option for wakep timers which might be stopping your sleep not staying asleep

What is the difference between Sleep and Hibernate? Is Sleep just a low power state that wakes up quicker and Hibernate switches it off altogether?

Which is the better one to use?
  • thanks debitcardmayhem, am still struggling! Have now got it to hibernate off the sleep button and down it goes....and up again. Can't find the **wake up timers which may well be the key..don't seem to come up when i do a help search either. Any idiot proof way of getting to this setting pls? Thanks for your patience(:

Hi Luci, sleep is low power state as you said , if you have a power cut then you lose what was happening. Hibernate save current status to hard disk to a file called hiberfil.sys and you can then remove power from the pc until you want it again. I have rarely had problems <0.1% of times with hibernate and restarting and in that case you get the normal "PC was not shutdown properly" prompt. I use hibernate on all our pcs but obviously restart from time to time (Win 7/Vista/XP)
