HELP! Please Setting up Wireless Router?

Hi all

I'm in a bit of a pickle!!

Basically I'm changing over to plusnet they told me it would be tomorrow but it has started today so I wasn't prepared and now have no broadband :( I am currently on line by dial up  which is just painful!!

Anyway I'm a bit clueless and just thought everything I needed was going to be in the box with the Thomson router that Plusnet sent me? I was going to look at the instructions this afternoon :o

I have now realised I need a usb thingy to make my pc wireless and I am only going to be able to get to argos :( for the next couple of days and I need my broadband set up asap.

So I was going to buy one of these:

would it be ok for what I would need or should I pay a bit more and get this one?

I'm hoping to set it up to the downstairs phone line for my pc that is upstairs, obviously I'm an Mser but I don't want to get the cheaper one if it won't do the job properly!

Any quick help much appreciated! I would normally have researched it online but it would take me days on dial up!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

I think, (and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong), that you actually need the cheaper one. The dearer one is 'N' which is the latest wireless spec that gives higher speeds but unless your router is also 'N' it won't make any difference to the signal you'll get.
  • Yes, the cheaper one is 54Mbps, the dearer N one is 150Mbps. So as already said, depends on what speed your wireless router can run at.

    Thanks guys!

I'm not really sure the router is a thomson Gateway but I can't see anything on the router itself or the instructions about an N or what speed it is?

Download the datasheet. Or read article here.
It says "The THOMSON TG585 is an 802.11b/g wireless LAN access point with integrated ADSL."

So 54Mbps is the top speed.

Are you switching from another broadband provider? How did you connect to that? If you used a cable between your PC and the router just re-use that?

According to this, it's 802.11b & g but not 'n' so I would say the cheaper one is what you want.

I think she said she's changing from dial up. If so, there could be a phone point upstairs where the router could plug in. Not ideal, but it could save the cost of a dongle.

I know - but it was ambiguous as they said they are using dial-up now because they are 'changing over' to Plusnet. And the fact they said the dial-up was painful suggested they are used to broadband, thats all :)
