T-Mobile PAC? Early cancellation fee?

Hi guys,

My contract with T-Mobile will expire on the 9th of April but apparently I can upgrade now. The lady at the other end offered me rubbish deals identical to the ones on the website for new customers but I'm not sure whether I can get better deal in my last month of contract (9th of March onwards). Anyway I asked her the procedure of getting a PAC code and she said I can get it on the 9th of April when my contract expires. I told her I need a few days to look for deals and I understand that I can use the PAC code within one month and therefore I can ask for it maybe 3 weeks before my contract ends and use it on the 9th of April. She said yes but I will be charged an early cancellation fee unless I ask for the PAC code on the 9th of April itself, because the early cancellation fee is charged when the PAC code is generated, not used.

Is this true? Or is she talking rubbish?

If your contract ends on April 9 then they will change you to that date. Using the pac won't get the contract ended any early.
  • It's true, with T-mobile you basically have to pay the end of your contract off to get your PAC, if you get your PAC while still in contract then best to use it immediately as the days in-between requesting your PAC and your number porting you effectively pay twice.

I've just done this as I didn't want to miss out on a particularly good deal by waiting a couple more weeks for the contract to end. Wait until you've found the deal you want before requesting your PAC from T-mobile, they'll give it to you while you're on the phone (don't have to wait for a letter or text like some). There's no notice period with T-Mobile if you port out so there is no advantage in getting it in advance.

I intend to use the PAC code on the 9th of April when my contract expires but alas I can only get it for free on that day itself.

What if I ask for the PAC code on the 9th of April and then use it in the next few days (10,11,12). Will I be charged the full monthly amount (10th of April to 9th of May) with T-mobile even if I have ported my number within 3 days?

It seems like I am going to pay twice either way. If I request before my contract ends, I'll have to pay for early cancellation fee. If I request for it on the 9th of April (assuming I only join a new network a few days after the 9th of April), I will get charged the one month (or pro-rated?) tariff from T-Mobile (for usage between 9th of April and porting)?

No, you'd just pay for the 3 days in that case (with no early termination fee because you're out of contract). If you'd paid line rental in advance you'd receive a final bill in credit which would then be refunded.

Thanks! I think that's what I'm gonna do.

Not so sure about that - as you are not out of contract!
You have merely completed the minimum contract and the contract continues on a monthly rolling basis
