Defragging help please

Probably being a thicko here but I am using pirifrom defraggler to defrag my puter - horrified to see it needs 55% defragmentation - thing is its been on for about 5 hours now and I see that the defragging has sort of stuck at 30%.

Am I being stupid here, but when I leave it and come back hours later, the puter has gone into slumber mode and I have to jiggle the mouse to get the picture back on the monitor. During that time does the defragging program just stop until its jiggled? If so, should I be doing something to keep it awake whilst its defragging? Or can I go to bed, smug in the knowledge it will all be done by the morning?

  • Hi,

think there is an option in power savings to set the sleep or whatever, need to go into control panel for that.

Thanks, found it and it says put the computer to sleep after an hour at the mo. So Ive changed that to never. I do hope that works as this is like watching paint dry.

    Hi,

defraggler, same set up as ccleaner, I never seem to have to defrag, I'm on vista home premium, though use ccleaner regularly.

OP - it does take several hours, especially if you haven't defragged for a long time. Just leave it on overnight, you don't need to sit and watch it - in the morning your computer will run nicely again :)

    Don't be 'horrified', it's nothing :)

To save time, it is advisable to defrag in safe mode; as your 'puter boots up, continually tap the F8 key. You will get a menu with various options. Select 'safe mode'. The on-screen graphics will look horrible, but don't worry, just defrag and when it's done, re-boot as normal.

Although you didn't mention your OS, I'll assume some form of MS. If so, why aren't you using the onboard defrag?
