Problem with Moving my Sky to a new home

Problem with Moving my Sky to a new home
Hi everyone,

I am hoping someone here can help me out as I seem to be getting anywhere with Sky itself.

Basically to cut a long story short I am moving house next weekend and I contacted Sky on Monday 15th to arrange my home move. As far as I am aware everything went well and I was told that my services would be disconnectd the day before I moved and I would recieve a phonecall from the engineers to arrange my new installation date.

Today I received a phone call from the home movers department and said that there was a problem with my move, apparently the guy I spoke to on Monday was still in training and has made an ar*e of the whole thing and she said that they wouldnt be able to arrange anything until the day I am actually moving and then it would take at least 14days to arrange an engineer to come out to my new house and install my tv services and then a further 14 days to arrange my telephone and broadband services.

Now I wouldnt have usually been that bothered but surely there must be something else that they can do to help me in this situation?
This has not been my fault and I dont see why I should have to suffer because someone hasnt done there job right - training or not surely they should be able to do something? I did mention to the lady that I spoke with this afternoon today that if I couldnt get this resolved I would be cancelling my account with them and then I was told that I would be going against my contract????

Is there anyone out there that coud offer me some advice, I have looked into joining Virgin Media, but Im going to end up paying more for that an Sky with less channels.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post very frustrated.

  • There are several options but I suppose that's the problem.

Is there a BT line in your new house already?
If so BT may be able to give you Phone service very quickly.

You do not have wait to get Sky to install your new Sky dish, you could get an independent insatller to do it for you, though it may cost a little more.

Virgin may have "less channels" but are they channels you will actualy miss?
You could with Virgin Media for all services for 12 Months, then change back to Sky, probably getting a new customer deal and a new Sky+HD box.
  • Hi Mark,

Thanks for replying. I was thinking that I could go ahead and get a BT phone line put into the property but I was unsure as to how that would affect my sky subscription???
With regards to getting the new sky dish etc, do you mean that I could just contact a new installer and pay them to install everything? what would then happen with my sky account? as I thought that sky had to do that?

    Sorry for all the questions

  • If you are outside the 12 minimum contract you can just call Sky and cancel the phone and broadband, (but keeping the TV service).

Installing a Sky dish is like installing a TV aerial, you can get any competent person to do it. If the previous resident has a Sky dish you shouldn't need an installer, you can just connect it up yourself, it's not that technical.

One thing though, if you have multiroom you will need to connect both boxes to a phone line, so it may complicate things. If you have to pay to have two phone points put in it may get expensive.
  • The house I am moving to does not have a Sky dish so I suppose there lies the problem. I also have multiroom so that doesnt really solve the problem.

Oh well, looks like I will have to just sit and wait for it to happen then.

    Thanks again

  • As recommended think of your phone service and satellite service as being totally separate.

Is there already a phone line in the new property? There is a number of ways of finding out, ranging from calling BT to asking the present owner or tenant. If there is a line then simply ask to take it over on your move date. Nothing to do with $ky.

Having to wait 14 days to have a minidish installed is unacceptable. Having it done by a local, reputable installer may be the best solution.

Asda sells inexpensive telephone extension kits, which are easy to install.
    RIP independent MSE.

All of this presupposes that a satellite dish can be installed at the new home. Have you checked that:

A dish can be installed where it has line of sight to the satellite?
The house isn't a listed building or in a conservation area?
  • As far as I am aware there is telephone line within the property and I know that the dish can be installed. It is not a listed building or a conservation area.

Would I be better calling sky today and asking them if I can just get a local installer to come out and fit a new dish etc for me and then just get a new telephone and broadband package?

Keep the same bundle with Sky, use the installer to just supply and put up the dish, book him for the day you move, unpack box plug in and watch.

Yes they need to be plugged in to the phone number on file but its not an issue for the few days between your move and sky getting their act together.

BUT before then just tell them if they don't get round sharpish as agreed you're off...to suggest they cant start planning until the day you move is wrong.
  • Thank you. I have taken your advise and finally got in touch with a Sky manager today who has "promised" me that this issue will be resolved today and he will be calling me back within the hour. I think if this has not been resolved to my advantage then I will be moving to another provider.

    Thanks again for everyones help.
