My consultant said 1700 was the minimum calorie intake they recommended for sustanable healthy weight loss. I don't count calories at all except for putting my information into Calorie Counter a couple of times but keeping a food diary, trying to eat smaller portions, walking a lot and making healthier choices has helped me to lose weight.

The diet advice is great but I can not emphasise enough the benefits of exercising more. Personally I have a personal trainer who is superb. I have 2 sessions a week and then I have joined a touch rugby team so train once a week for 2 hours. Thats 4 hours a week and with that my body fat measurements have dropped off. Rather than a sports side you could try joining a gym and then going to the classes. The spin/rpm classes burn cals off like no ones business! I have mentioned in another thread myprotein. They are also good for advice on diet plans and also supplements. All info on there is free too so added bonus! Exercising more will make you feel much better. I am 31 now and yes you do put more on but by keeping more active its easier to maintain a body shape and also eat more fun stuff ;-)

A typical woman would hardly lose anything on that amount, a couple of pounds per month tops, assuming you could count it exactly (which you can't), a slight mistake in counting, and you could put on weight.
As I said sustainable healthy weight loss which is slow and steady. My diet clinic do not recommend counting calories and I don't. As I have already said I keep a food diary keep an eye on my portions and walk a lot. The weight is coming off nice and steadyly.:)

All weight loss is sustainable, if you don't start overeating again afterwards.

Being aware of your calorie intake is the basis to any successful diet.
When people lose weight quickly it tends to go back on. As I said I do not count calories but I am losing weight so that is good enough for me, I am obviously doing something right! I am eating healthyly, having the odd treat and not going hungry.

Closed, I can't be bothered arguing with you, but you are dismissing so many people thoughtlessly with your comments that all weight loss is sustainable. I could give you (admittedly anecdotal) evidence that it doesn't even when following a rigid diet maintenance plan.

I'll give everyone the link to Weightless and then I'm out of this thread.

I know exactly how misgrace feels. I became vegan September last year. Joined the gym in Dec and haven't lost a pound - in fact i've put on most weeks. My OH said i'm not eating enough protein but I do eat tofu, releat meat substitute products etc but just not losing it. I think I would feel a bit of a fake if I went to being vegetarian and eating scrambled eggs and such like....

I recently saw a programme with a large female comedian, who was convinced it was her metabolism that caused her to be large, since she ate very healthily.

They tested her metabolism, run of the mill normal. They asked to record what she ate at the end of each day for a week or two. Then they asked her to do it after every single thing she placed in her mouth. There was over 1000 calories a day difference.

Bananas contain about 100 calories a piece, avocado 150. Fruit basically has a lot more calories than people think, they automatically assume since it's healthy it can't be the issue.

I cannot believe you are truly only eating 800 a day, especially with an active lifestyle, and not losing fat.

My OH started a new diet recently, 5 meals (well, eating incidents can be just a bit of fruit), about 1200 calories a day, 1 luxury meal of 600 calories (not included in the 1200) a week. When she stuck to it well, she was losing 1.5kg a week, without as active a lifestyle as yourself.

Start working out exactly what, and how much you are eating. And as an aside, protein (however you get it) causes the feeling of fullness far better than any other food type.
