You work during the day right, how can you unpack a roller in half an hour when you have customers asking where stuff is(do you get customers asking you for stuff)

Hah, Zazen that is exactly what I thought myself, I'd like to see her do it in half an hour! It's just not physically possible. I also suspected that she's throwing her weight around and showing that she's serious by sacking people left and right to scare the rest of us into working harder. She is rigidly sticking by her half an hour per cage however, despite the fact that no-one has been able to acheive it. So far all of us have been doing as you suggest and cracking on with it, making an effort to not be seen to be chatting with any other staff members, and trying to be as efficient as possible. We're all too scared as to what will happen if we don't! If we are underacheiving as a store, and it's the shop floor staff's fault (till staff seem to be safe from all of this), I'd much rather be told by a manager who we all respect and know, who has been at the store from the start as I'd feel more willing and happy to try and put things right and be more productive with my time.

Snowbrow - I don't want to mention which store it is as you shouldn't boycott them ;) They're actualy a good store, and I've loved working there until now! The rest of the senior management have always been really good, it's just this one person that's causing all the trouble

Are there really all that many cages that ALL of the staff ALL have to unpack ALL cages and the only time you have to do it in means they ALL have to be unpacked in 30 minutes?

I'd seriously innocently ask how to do it 'properly' so that you can learn from her experience and know what standard you need to be working to.
  • Are you a union member? If not, it might be worth the few quid for a years membership. They can sometimes be useful!

Yep...another vote for the "ask her to demonstrate how it can be done in 30 minutes flat school of thought".

Do NOT resign though....you dont want to find yourself on the receiving end of the DWP refusing to give you benefits for up to 6 months because you are deemed to have resigned from a job.

Try the "example" session from her (if you can get it). It sounds to me like she is trying to make people redundant without having to pay them for it - so start making plans now and review your financial circumstances.

But - whatever you do - DO NOT RESIGN.

get yourself in a union asap is my advice, try usdaw or GMB or unison.... your employers have to follow proceedure and sacking on the spot is generally only for gross misconduct, i.e. theft, drink drugs, fighting. If your not in a union its a difficult fight but i would keep a detailed diary.

Maybe write to head office (not putting your name) to raise your concerns

I did say Anihilator would be along in a previous post, but OP needs to act collectively with colleagues and ask for a demonstration of the correct way to unload the cages, in order to achieve the targets. If it proves impossible, one red faced angry manager.

Also a vote for the ask how to do it plan. You dont have anything to lose if you phrase it right and sound like you want to learn rather than as a sarcastic push back. You either learn how to do it or that it cant be done.

Every five seconds pretty much :rotfl:

Well we get a delivery every night so most of the morning will be spent unpacking that, then once delivery is done we have to load cages up with backstock and put that out too. So the full day is spent doing cages, until about 4 when we have to start facing up the shop.

No I'm not in any Union, but will definately look into it. Say I was sacked and was in one, what would they be able to do? Loopy_lass I thought they could only sack on the spot like that for gross misconduct too, but maybe because I haven't been there for a year yet this doesn't apply?

I would honestly be too scared to ask for a demonstration in case she thought I was being cheeky (which I probably would be :o ), she's not the most easily approachable woman.

Ceridwen - thanks for the advice, I hadn't thought of it like that! I was just thinking if I was sacked and I got asked in an interview why I left my last job or something it wouldn't reflect very well on me!
