having just checked the legislation, since 2005 any work carried out on anything electrical in a bathroom or kitchen must be done by a recognised competent person.
it amazes me how many diy'ers think they can do anything. amazes me even more that they come to a forum such as this where often erronious advice can be given. i hope to god they do not have kids that might get hurt by such incompetence and penny pinching (ie trying to save a few quid by not paying for proper install)0 -
I wasn't intimating that the OP was competent. I was inferring that in the eyes of the law 'competent person' doesn't just mean someone that is qualified by examination. Competence can also include competence by experience. Although I accept that there are areas in law where competence is expressly identified to be via examination. Gas Safe, for example. There is a plethora of case law about competent persons as well as reams of publication from the HSE. I certainly don't advocate people acting without the appropriate training/qulaifications/experience. I was just trying to make a general point that the law accepts competence (in certain areas) includes experience.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

you are right phill, ie minor works such as replacing a socket etc. the legislation specifically prohibits though kitchen and bathroom work. this legislation was passed in 2005. admittedly not a lot of people seem to know about it, but its true. i appreciate a lot of people are probably very capable of doing it themsleves, but believe me, more people think they are capable than are, and the law is in place to protect everyone else from the diy 'expert'.
even now i get customers proudly telling me they are going to install there new gas cooker themselves, even asking me how to do it! then in the next sentence claining they are a competent person! its the same with electrics0 -
I run a Maintenance Company and prior to 2005, I would do 'Minor Works' myself eg changing light fittings etc. With the sue happy society that we live in, I find it easier to sub ALL electrical work to a qualified Sparks. Saves a lot of long term problems and shows customers that you aren't a fly by night merchant!Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0
