Old account with Leicester Building Society

Options
I opened a share account with the Leicester Building Society in 1985 when I was in my teens and my last transaction was in March 1991 and I have discovered I still have funds in the account.

I found my account book with them several days ago whilst having a major sort out but they no longer seem to be in existence. How do I go about getting hold of these funds?

Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,

well I think they joined up with Alliance to form Alliance & Leicester, who went with Abbey, who are now Santander, so look into one of the branches, I would think your money will be save,,,,,,,,,,,somewhere.

  • Yes I thought it had to have gone down the route of Alliance & Leicester. Could be entertaining trying to track that far back.

God did I miss out on shares?

    Hi,

well, I was thinking that as well, you should've had some kinda communication at the time, you may've changed address of course.

Might as well ask about that as well then.

    Good luck.
  • Yes have changed address quite a few times over the years, was living at home when I opened the account and then moved in with OH and then my mum died and her house was sold so would not have got any post following that. Just forgot about the account and then came across the account book.

Ooooh I'm a bit excited now - probably won't come to anything though.
  • Hi,

well you should get your savings and interest, though wouldn't hold much hope for the shares.

This says, 'unclaimed shares can be sold three years after the shares are floated' and 'that after the shares are sold, there are only nine years in which to begin a claim, or you'll be out of luck completely.'

A&L was floated in 1997, no harm in asking though.
  • Well, I can't be any worse off for asking anyway. In the unlikely event that I can get the shares it would be a lovely little windfall. Thanks very much for your help.
  • Hi,

well I hope you're lucky, and get something from them.

I'm off to do the lottery now, so hope I'm lucky, might as well have a beer whilst I'm out any way.
  • Have just phoned A&L and they aren't able to trace the account with my account number (as the number on my account book doesn't have enough digits in today's terms) or my maiden name and have said I need to go into a branch - the plot thickens.
  • I think you probably have more chance winning the lottery than I do have trying to even get my money out of the account at this rate. Enjoy your beer!
  • Hi,

    maybe this will help.

    I'm off.
