I know what you mean Ive been living off tins which Best before date shows Oct 2008. 6 months ago they would have gone in the bin not anymore:money:
Im still here to tell the tale and no dodgy side effect yet :D
The tin im not looking forward to is the rice pudding and i have 3 of them, but the tomato soup spaghetti and beans were all fine.
Well done on your debt busting will read more when i get back from a quick run round Mr T if i run i dont put much in the basket :rotfl:

I tend to think of best before dates as guides the supermarket use to tell them when to put an item on the bargain shelf.

The other day I forgot about a bag of stir fry vegetables I had put in the fridge, when I checked they were 7 days out of date. Stir fried them and they were great, no side effects whatsoever.

Clearly after a month I may have looked at the issue slightly differently, but lets face it everything has a degree of safety built in these days. If your meat says best before the 10th, its probably safe for some time after that.

Thanks BLT yes I do use the reduced shelf quite a bit now and freeze them till needed. I also do alot of home baking than i did before but never having a role model (mother that never cared) in my life it is all still a very deep learning curve.

Ok decided yesterday that it would be good to have a veggy patch in my garden, and I wont loose much garden to do it, well I started the clearing yesterday and moved a small bush to the other side of the garden, good idea? I thought so then just as i moved shooting pain left hand side hip straight across to centre of back  God it hurts!! sometimes those moments should be left alone:D.

decided not to rush at it so will have the rest of this year to get the soil sorted and sieved ( it's like a gravel pit under the grass) also learn about it too, quite excited really never managed this kind of hobby before, and it will save some pennies.:).

    any advise gratefully recieved.

You could do some in pots/tubs to start you off :) I planted peas, potaotoes, beetroot, carrots and a few other's last year as I don't have a garden and the potatoes and carrots were excellent :) Only doing pea's, potatoes, blackberry and strawberries this year though :)

    Hi Bevan

Yes thankyou, my neighbour does her vegg in pots but then she does have a rather large pool in her garden above ground so was better for her, I have almost finished my patch and yesterday my neighbour bless them gave me some pea plants, 2 tomatoe plants. looks quite sad at the mo but is a start their also going to let me have some beans and carrots when their ready and my other neighbour also said I can have some when redy also, so I apart from the hard work in digging the patch this year is a very MSE
idea and am very excited about the prospect of having home grown :D.

have strawberry plants growing in a wall basket, first attempt very pleased.
