Cancelled O2 now they are sending me bills

I signed up with O2 access broadband late September last year.
Like many customers I experienced terrible speeds and a poor connection. I called O2 customer service and made it abundantly clear that I wanted to cancel my account. They said that was fine as i was in my first 30days and could terminate without any charges.
I was emailed a MAC key that i used to transfer to Vivaciti.
Since then i have still been receiving bills from O2. I emailed them and they are trying to say that my O2 broadband connection is still active, that i owe £34 in rental and will have to pay £180 to cancel.
The email requested that i call customer services to cancel. The thing is I already did that last year.
I have to told them that as far as i'm concerned that I cancelled the subscription in October and will not be paying any further fees. They maintain that the fees are owed and must be payed.
What is my next course of action?

No doubt in a year or so's time you'll get a series of meaningless debt collection agency letters. :whistle:Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0 -
Its quite common for isps to bill for a service after its been cancelled using a MAC (due to llu )because the broadband is provided by a wholesale provider and they may have failed to tell the retail provider (in this case O2) That the broadband has been switched to another isp. O2 will need to check in the BT Wholesale system called Eco to see the service cease date. and hopefully backdate your charges0

The email generic email containing the MAC from O2 does tell you that simply using a MAC will not terminate your account and you have to do this through customer services. As i had already done that and clearly stated I wanted to terminate my account I saw no reason to call a second time.0

Despite emails to O2 earlier in the year, in which they replied that they cannot deal with it via email because i was an O2 Access customer - I have no been called by an O2 representative asking me about the account. I told her the story and she is looking into but O2 insist the account wasn't cancelled until march 2010. Which is odd as I called them and told not 1 but 2 customer service reps in Oct 09 that I want to cancel0
