As far as I know trying to use the card with insufficient funds will count as a black mark.
Although co-op are very strict about this, they are also very good at letting you know the true position of your account. If you call them (24 hours) they will not only let you know the balance on the account, but also what debits have been authorised but not yet debited, thus giving you a true picture. If I ever think I have less than about £100, I will always call first to check before using the card.
Can you actually phone them up then to see if your account has any 'bad' marks against it?0 -
with the co-op, isn't the ''3 strikes' thing, in any one rolling 12 month period?
This isa major reason why I don't like direct debit......and yes, I know it costs me in terms of lost 'discounts'...but I prefer to be totally in control of what goes out and comes into my bank accounts......
I had an issue with Co-op over a year ago, concerning Orange and their direct debit system.
I had [have] two co-op accounts....Orange originally having a DD set up on the original account.
I wanted to change the account the DD came out of....so went through Orange's online account details change...as normal.....even got confirmation, etc.
Thought no more about it...ensured ana dequate amount was in the new account....next thing, got a warning letter from co-op...[and orange]....saying that Orange had tried 3 times to get paymetn, without success...co-op wanted to close down the account staright away.
Whooaaaah, just a minute....I gets on the blower and blew my top with Co-op..[this was pre-BR anyway].... got the lady to investigate...turned out...despite confirmation of account change, Orange had tried to access funds from the original account.....[luckily I had notified Co-op of teh change of DD earlier anyway...so they had a record on the computer]....turned out, Orange have a cut-off date within the month, before which all changes must be done or that months paymetn is demanded frm the old account.
Nowhere on their website did it mention this...on the pages used for account changes.
Again I hit the roof....with orange..this tie dealing with an Indian call centre!!!!!!!!!!!
Turned out, I had changed account, right on the cusp of the cut-off.....had I doen the deed in the morning, all would have been well...but I did it in the afternoon!
so...back onto co-op....informed lady of what had happened...and basically said, either those strikes were sorted, or I moved all accounts....
she was understanding anyway.....and the strikes were discounted.
If you 'appeal' on the phone to co-op direct.....the ladies have the discretion to ''un-tick'' the boxes on the computer screen......
however, i advise you press for the lady to add a note to the account to the effect of what happened, and the strikes havebeen discounted......in case it happens again...becaue computers are enormously fickle and uncaring. No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -

As Dojoman says, it is worth a try. I have to say that except for one occasion, co-op have always been more than helpful on the phone.

Do be a bit carefull though
Somwtimes payments have been authorised but don't yet show on the online balance - if you call, they can tell you what is "in the pipeline" and yet to come off. BSC 2710 -
I thought everybody had a right to a bank account in this country - its a disgrace that they can just close your account without notice!!
I hope you get another one sorted soon.
This 3 strike and your out rule is terrible.:j Goodbye debt - Hello sanity! :j0 -
Hi all, I have some info that may be of use to some of you. I too have always been scared of the "3 strikes" rule with my cashminder account since I opened it post BR. I am always really really careful to check my balance online every day and on the phone regularly. When I was looking through my online statement tonight I noticed that a DD was listed as being claimed yesterday but wasnt showing on my statement. I phoned the Co-op who confirmed that it had been returned unpaid due to insufficient funds.
At this point I panicked!! I explained to they guy on the phone that the DD had been claimed early (as it wasn;t due til tommorow when I get paid). Anyhow, I said I was really worried about the 3 strikes things and he explained that the 3 Strikes rule lasts for 3 years. As this was my first "strike" he said not to worry and even confirmed that they would waiver the usual £19.50p charge.
SO, the 3 Strikes rule is on a rolling 3-year period. A "strike" is any unreturned direct debit or when your card is declined. So if your card is declined once in a shop, etc, DON'T TRY IT AGAIN!!
Hope the above info is of some use. Sorry for the long-winded essay! Although the 3 Strikes rule scares me I still think the Co-Op are very fair and they have certainly given me the chance of getting my finances sorted since my BR (of which I was discharged last November!) :beer:0 -

Thats really strange, not sure what info is correct, I phoned the Coop last night regarding this 3 strike rule and the guy told me your strikes stay on your account for 12 months. Not sure who has been given the correct info0 -
Strikes arnt counted for visa debit declines only DD and SO or something that takes you overdrawn. If you try a debit transaction and it declines thats fine its only bad if the money is taken and it takes you overdrawn, I just called and asked, as Ive easily had more than 3 declines on pin terminals0
