Coop have closed my account, im so upset

What a nightmare, I got a letter today from British Gas saying that as my direct debit had been cancelled. Now I didnt do this so wne tonto my online banking and all direct debits and standing orders are cancelled.

Ive just rang the bank and they said as of 9th Feb my account is closed, but if anything gets paid in until 12th March I can transfer it out.

He said it was becasue I had more than 2 'account misuse' on it, including a direct debit last year that didnt go through.

Im so upset, what the hell do I do now? Im getting paid next friday and need to try and get them to pay it into my husbands account. All our bills come out of that account so I presume we will get more letters this week :-(

Im going to have to try and open another account tomorrow, is it best to try Barclays? Ive been discharged since May last year. Will it still be a basic account?

To top it all off I rang British Gas and she was really rude and insisted I paid today in full, over £200 so I said all I can do it ring back next Fri when I get paid and hopefully re set up the DD.

I'm pg and hormonal and cant stop crying, why is life so crap and why am I always so skint :-(

Hang on in there, I know it is easier said than done, you need to take a minute or 60, a deep breath and tackle the issue, to me it would seem your wages can still be paid in as you have said that you have until the 12th to use your account, make a list of DD and SO and as soon as your new account is set up then you can set all this up again. It has been said quite a few times that the co op have a 3 strike rule, but I would still try and see if you can get it overturned(worth a try).

Try and keep clam and Im sure more help will be along.

We have a co op cashminder account and they did this to us a while back. We didn't know about the 3 strike rule. Ours was to do with the debit card, I cannot recall exactly what happened but I seem to remember a company tried to take an amount off the card 3 times and because there was some problem every time, they closed the account.
The first I knew was a letter from them saying the account was closed. I rang them up and really complained and they eventually overturned this and re-opened the account. Due to the fact that failed debit card transactions do not show up on the online banking, whereas direct debits do.
I am now changing to Natwest as I have found the customer service from them second to none and I have a branch near me. The nearest co op branch to me is Manchester (I am in Mid Wales) so have to pay money in through post office and have had problems with post office being down.
The other thing is Natwest give you a visa debit card which seems more acceptable than visa electron.

Good luck with everything, I know what its like when you are pregnant and having to go through this. I was pregnant with my youngest whilst dealing with this. Keep strong and hopefully they will overturn it for you.

Sunny....good to see you around but sorry to hear about your co-op hassles I can only imagine how upset it left you (i've come close before & begged them for advice)

you can try barclays basic account they offered me an account a while ago (now comes with a visa debit) it'll be a basic account along with any other you try while the BR sits on your files for 6yrs....best to open an account in branch as if they put info through on the PC it'll be refused

Natwest as welshsue suggested as well gave me an account you will need proof of discharge with them and one thing to bear they refused people here in the past as well so no guarantee you'll get one..where as with barclays you should be fine

sorry to hear what's going on, must be stressful. the direct debits can be soon sorted out so don't panic. try barclays - let us know how you get on x
  • Natwest can be a bit fickle and tend to steer clear of BR's and discharged BR's. Even if they did open an account for you, I've heard they often close accounts for no reason.

Try Barclays. Make sure you ask for the basic cash account and you'll need to open it in branch and take some i.d. in with you and you can do it there and then and even get an account number. Check out the Barclays website as to what i.d. you'll need.

  • Sunny !! Hunni so lovely to see you are ok....sorry to hear about the Coop but if they don`t want your business then I am sure Barclays will.

Good luck with it & let us know how it all goes.
