However top tip here.......wine boxes take up loads of room and where most people put numerous large bottles of milk I find vodka and baileys fit perfectly and you can always fill any gaps with some bottles of red bull. Never let it be said I don't keep my fridge energy efficient:):)
    Good tip Nels ;)

A lot of people have talked about avoiding waste by having an empty fridge. Having a full fridge does not automatically mean you are going to end up throwing food out. I rarely have to throw food away. All depends on your household.

Today I will be serving up the leftover salad with our evening meal. The main part of the meal will be a leek and bacon tart made from several fridge items-eggs, cream, milk, bacon, leeks, butter and lard for the pastry.
  • Yep pathetic fridge here too.

All cartons of UHT milk, cream, grated cheese, eggs, a bit of veg, HM yoghurts and that's it!!

I never get that 'back from a big shop' feeling anymore ;)

Freezer is normally packed with batch cooking, meat, HM bread, scraps, egg yolks, fruit from garden etc but using everything up this month in bid to spend little money and getting ready for bulk buy from butcher 1st March (pay day! :rotfl:)

    Interesting thread thanks

I bet your friends' fridges have to be picked through regularly and stuff that has gone off thrown away - all that food and packaging wasted. If you can make a quick meal for you when you need to, surely that's a good level at which to operate.
  • I like having sparse cupboards and fridge and freezer. I like to have all the food in a single row facing the front, if you've too much in there you can't do that and you can't see what you've got because there is stuff in front of other stuff. Then you forget what's in there and it goes mouldy and you have to throw it away.

  • Our fridge is pretty full at the moment as we've switched over from shopping ever day or two, to planning our shopping and only going to the shops once a week. Before that, it was always empty - we tended to buy the food and then eat it before it had a chance to get into the fridge. An ex boyfriend always used to come round to my house, check the fridge and show shock and horror if I actually had any food in it! He thought I was very strange, but I only ever bought food in very small quantities as I didn't have a car.

However, our new American style fridge/freezer arrives tomorrow, so it will probably look pretty empty to start with! Really looking forward to filling the freezer and spending a few Sunday afternoons batch cooking which I've never had the freezer space to do before.
  • I don't buy ready made-foods, and rarely buy any dairy ingredients, but I never have enough room in my fridge or freezer! I have loads of fresh veg, leftovers and home made ready meals, but don't throw much away either.

I guess you just find the way things work best for you!

i find it my freezer that nearly always empty. i buy fresh weekly and for family of 5 thats fills fridge quite well. we eat loads of fruit and veg . i have a large bowl of fruit of dinning table but rest goes in fridge. were planning on buying one of those tall massive fridges because we struggle so much . but i've 2 freezers and one is nearly off all time as i just don't need it, becuase i don't buy much frozen food, i do freeze extra protions, but i been trying to only cook what we eat so nothing gets wasted.
but well don't on cutting out all the rubbish. home made sausages rolls are so much better than any shop bought ones.
  • You know what would be more embarrassing....buying excessive amounts of food just to make the cupboards look full then ending up throwing loads away. ;)

I don't know if you live alone but if so, it's inevitable, because cupboards/fridges tend to be of a size to cater for more than one person.

Mine is always full because I eat a lot of different foods - so I always have a jar of red lentils, a jar of green lentils, one of chickpeas, one of quinoa, one of couscous, white rice, brown rice, black eyed beans, split peas, pasta, etc etc etc :D

but as long as you have enough to eat, that's all that matters.
