We live in a town and last summer installed a woodburning stove into our 1970s 4 bed detached. We don't have a chimney so had an external flue built.
It is awesome. It lights with one match and is incredibly controllable. Even in this cold winter (we live in the North) we have hardly used our central heating. We barely use the tumble drier as we now dry clothes overnight next to the woodburner. We seem to have halved our gas bill (gas central heating, hot water and cooking).
Wood - I registered as a waste carrier and with the help of my son in law and his van, charged local businesses to remove their waste wood. Yes, we have to saw and chop it up. It isn't difficult, I am 52 and manage it after a day's work. I use a handsaw, I prefer to the electric saw. We've in effect, wiped out our gas bill and have been lovely and warm all winter.
    It works for me!
