EDF Energey - Villains or is it me?
Options
Inherited EDF energy for providing both Gas & Electricity from previous tenants and saw no reason to change.
Previous tenants were on DUAL energy tariff.
It transpires 12 months on that we were not put on the dual energy tariff (even though we have always had both Gas & Electricity) as we never took out a contarct to do so.
This equates to about £150 we would have saved.
They claim to have written to us offering the Dual Energy tariff... we claim they never wrote to us, thus we were not aware.
Surely they can see we use both Gas and Electricity and should have applied the tariff..... or they can see we took over from previous tenants and should have kept the tariff in place..... or maybe they could have sent a reminder to their intial letter (they claim to have sent).
Either way they refuse to back date any 'overpayment' as I see it... and I feel ripped off.
In addition we signed up for Direct Debit... tempted by the £25 Sainsury's vouchers... and when I enquired about the whereabouts of said vouchers today they apologised and said they have a backlog.... they didn't write to me about that though!
What a bunch of gits..... surely they owe me the Dual tariff refund as... I've always had both Gas and Electricty... your views please....

Have you had a bill in the last year?
If yes, why has it taken you all year to work out what Tariff you are on?
I'm guessing you were put on their "standard" Tariff? It's up to you to select the most suitable Tariff for your lifestyle. Dual Fuel might not have been favourable if you were a low user, or didn't use much gas for example.0 -
Do you work for EDF Andy?
Marshall Monks, Customer Care Director for EDf states on a collegues bill....
"If you get both your gas and electricity from us, you're currently benefiting from cheaper prices, wherever you live and however you pay... we'll continue to keep an eye on the market to make sure your prices remain competitive"
I do get both Gas & Electricity and nope I don't get the benefit. He states it as if its a standard thing all dual customers receive. They haven't even kept an eye on my bill let alone the market!
To be honest, on page 3 of my bill it does say "Single Fuel Gas Deemed Tariff"... but I honestly wouldn't have known pre-today what that meant.... as I certainly do only have one lot of Gas coming in from EDF... and I don't read every word of my bills... like many I suspect.
As a customer I expect to be treated fairly and if EDf are doing as Marshall states.... "Everything we do at EDF Energy is guided by our values and our ambition. We are committed to delivering a great experience that brings value to our customers"
Then I expect to be helping them achieve their ambition by receiving a great experience, bringing value..... but I'm fed up with companies ripping off consumers.0 -

That’s your problem, a deemed tariff means that the supplier doesn't officially know who lives at the property and therefore doesn't have a contract with the person. But whoever has been living there still has to pay for the energy they use. As there is no contract there is a high risk of the person living in the property doing one without paying the bills, they have a high premium attached to it. So not only have you been missing out on a dual fuel discount you have been on their most expensive tariff.
As Andy said above it is your responsibility to contact a supplier when you move into a property. If you are on a deemed contract then the people who were in the flat before you contacted EDF to tell them they were moving out thus ending their contract. I'm guessing EDF is your host supplier, so they put the house on a deemed contract until the next occupier contacts them or another supplier to take up a new contract.
To get a Dual Fuel discount you have to be on contracts that can be matched up, do your bills perhaps come address to ‘the occupier’?0 -
"A deemed tarriff" as you suggest is nonsense...
When my wife and I undertook the rental of the house (fyi..4 bed detached not a flat... not that it matters) our letting agents notified EDF in writing with our details in March 2009 (confirmed by EDF today).... and the bills always come addressed to my wife and I.
So we should be on a dual tarriff.. we were not notified.
EDF claim they wrote a welcome letter to us but received no reply... we claim we did not receive such a letter but suggest that as we do receive both Gas & Electric we should be on the Dual Tarriff... not a single tarriff.
The logic is simple... (1) EDF are a massive company (2) We receive both Gas and Electricity from them, therefore (3) We should be on a dual tarriff... not to have to request one... particualrly if we are not aware we need to do so.
Why not put customers first?0 -
Welcome to the forum.
It is a case of 'buyer beware' when getting gas and electricity, and you really need to check your accounts.
That said, as EDF were notified that you moved in, I really do think you have a fair case and whilst EDF might not be technically liable, it would be reasonable for them to give you a refund as a goodwill gesture.
I would write a recorded delivery letter to EDF explaining the circumstances, and if you get an unfavourable response, escalate the matter.
P.S.
May I suggest that it doesn't help to accuse a poster of working for EDF because you disagree with their opinion - it isn't original!0 -

Well i agree then if both the bills are in your name then you shouldn't be on deemed and you should be able to claim a DF discount. You might also be able to claim back the extra cost of being on a deemed account.0 -
Relying on a letting agent/estate agent to give the right information was your first mistake, even though you have had this confirmed by EDF today you should have contacted them yourself as soon as you moved in, if you had then its unlikely you would be in this position now.
Second was not doing something about the deemed tariff sooner, why has it taken you a year to realise this? surely you should have had at least 2 bills in that time, did you not check them?Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
Plush Chris... best will in the world we are all busy people these days.. and short of looking to see how much a bill is, doing a quick check of the meter reading... thats about all I've ever done with Gas or Electric bills... I was never aware there were differing tarrifs.. I assumed you got charged for using units (ok more fool me)
On page three it does say "Single Fuel Gas Deemed Tariff" but until yesterday I would have had no idea what that meant.
A good, trusted supplier who is suppling two fuels to a property and billing named occupiers supplied to them would apply the correct tarrif.
.....this is not good customer relations, they know they supply dual fuel and the customer should be credited accordingly.0 -
So should they have forced you on to a tariff with a penalty to leave that would probably be another ten or twenty per cent cheaper? You would be happy to pay £100 to leave such a deemed tariff?
We are grown-ups. We live in the real world. We can be expected to have some experience of living in a household and to know elementary facts about housekeeping. That many choose not to do so is neither here nor there. Let us not add to the celebration of infantilism that is swamping our culture.
You did not know about this. You may be the only person in your circle who has ever flitted. (Really???) Bad luck. At least now all your children, some of your friends, your family - they will all know this fact.0
