My grandmother used to roll out leftover pastry into squares and bake them. She would keep them in a tin, then if they were having stewed fruit she would top my grandad's portion with the pre-cooked pastry. He didn't like plain stewed fruit but Grandma refused to put the oven on for just one thing.

I save pastry scraps-if they haven't already been frozen-in a bag in the freezer until I have enough to make the base of a quiche.

We just make small jam or lemon curd tarts or roll flat, spread jam/curd on top, roll into a swiss roll and cut into slices and bake.

With HM pastry, I wrap, pop in freezer and wait until I've got enough to make something with. Or I sometimes bake small bits and crumble up for the birds.

How about cracked black pepper, tomato paste & basil, a mix of poppy & sesame seeds, or even rock salt! mixed in & rolled out thin, cut into shapes & bake for posh biscuit nibbles
I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I Know

  • Hi, this is probably a bit calorific to use too often, but if you have any puff pastry left over and any bits of anything really, sweet or savoury, eg. cheese and onion, savoury mince, ratatouille etc these are delicious. Roll out your pastry and cut into squares, they can be as small as a postage stamp or as large as a cream cracker, put your filling in the centre and fold over corner to corner to make a triangle (sealing edges with whatever you have to hand which is suitable) then drop them in the deep fat fryer. They don`t take long to cook and are delicious. Just drain them and serve as nibbles or with some sort of accompaniment as a more filling meal.

This idea was given to me in the 70`s by a colleague, and although they may be naughty, I still think they are nice!
  • LilacLouisa that sounds GORGEOUS and certainly calorific. Luckily I haven't got a deep fat fryer ;)

Aha! saved from diet danger then :rotfl:Actually, in the seventies I think it may have been a chip pan, not sure if deep fat fryers were about then.
  • I'm doing quite well piling weight on being OS without the deep fat fryer thanks x I suppose at least I'm not deep frying all my cakes and muffins ;)

Chip pan sounds like a disaster waiting to happen too :rotfl:
