Pastry Scraps and nibble ideas please

Options
What do you do with your pastry scraps?

I use ready roll pastry for quiches and pies but I always have some scraps leftover.

Normally I make about 6 jam tarts from these scraps and bung them in the oven with the quiche or whatever.

I would like other ideas as I was thinking it might be a good idea to make a few savoury nibbles with the scraps put them in the freezer and build up an impressive collection for Christmas...cutting down on festive nibble costs

Thanks in advance

  • i roll mine really thinly, spread with marmite (slightly heated so it spreads thinly), fold over and roll again, then cut with tiny cutters and bake for a few mins. Lovely! and a small amount of pastry makes a plateful.

  • oh that's a good idea and I could do them in festive star shapes. Thanks Westcoastscot x I wonder if I could use other fillings? Not sure if tomato puree would be very tasty?

  • I roll it out and spread red bean paste on it, then roll it up like a swiss roll and bake for a sweet snack. Red bean paste is made from adzuki beans, is used to make baked goods in Japan and is fabulously cheap in Asian supermarkets.
  • WOW! Thanks Wigglebeena that sounds gorgeous ... haven't got any of the bean stuff and not much chance of getting it here in rural Normandy BUT it's inspired me .... love the swirl shape nibble idea

    Thanks again

I roll it out spread with tomato puree, grated cheese and finely chopped onion then roll it up like a swiss roll and slice. Put the slices on a baking tray, and cook for about 15 minutes at 200 degrees. Sometimes if I have leftover bacon I chop that into them too.

If you have leftover pesto it works well with these too and sprinkle with a little cheese before rolling up.

For a sweet version, cinnamon and sugar are lovely.
