I had a cal from my water supplier notifying me of a high meter reading, they thought I had a leak.Turns out it was their meter leaking. They are now going to bill me by estimating my bill over the two years it was installed. My bill will now shoot up 25%?The problem is that I was out of work for almost 6 months and using my parents shower at their property alot of the time to keep my bill low and conciously using less water over the period they are estimating.I was also away on holiday twice over the period. Is there anything I can do?I thought theyd average it out from my next month after meter installed.

  • If they are going to estimate your bills based on 2 years of consumption then that sounds fair to me.
They do not know your personal situation but by averaging it out over such a long period you should get a pretty accurate adc ( average daily consumption) the water company have to work it out somehow and to just use a month after meter installation would not be fair to most people as water use is seasonal and it would then depend on when the meter was installed etc.
How do you know your bill will go up 25% ? and if so how is that amount worked out ?
If you were out of work for 6 months then the rest of the time should help balance that out, that is why they have picked that period.

Don't see how the bill can go up, if you had been billed and then they discovered there was a high reading because of the leak your replacement bill must be lower and if you have not yet been billed there is no bill to increase?
(My water bill averages about £10/month, even if I have been watering the garden it does go up much so I don't think showers would make much difference unless you spend a long time in a power shower)
  • I know it will cost that amount as that is what they have estimated it at and advised me the bill will increase to each month.Seems to have jumped quite a bit. But as you say seasonal use, the six months the bill is for should be lower usage, than in summer months when you usually use more. Its little frustrating as Ive wasted time coming back from work to attend site for the meter installation and to check if there was a leak.First time I arrived to find they had removed the meter head and the admin staff had no idea where it had gone.Over 3 years ago they replaced the meter as they thought the previous meter was faulty as it was reading too little in their eyes.Just seem to be wasting my time and money.
  • They sent me two bills today one fr under £12 and the other for £255!Making a bit of a balls up.Both bills have the same date, so seems they were sent same day.
Lucky mine isnt the last one, thats how much water had leaked due to the fault meter.
