Need serious help, feeling really low!

I started a DMP last year and so far it's been an absolute nightmare. I'm really glad I started a DMP, I just wish I had done it a long time ago, however everything that could go wrong has! First of all my boiler packed in and I had to pay to have it replaced as I didn't want to take anymore credit (I wouldn't get even if I asked) so I plucked up the courage and told the CCCS my situation and they were very helpful. They gave me 3 months off my plan so I could pay the huge boiler bill. This obviously angered my creditors but it was something I really needed to do. So anyway I got all the usual threatening letters but I dealt with it and started back on the DMP. Now during this time I was actually receiving gas and electric bills for someone who doesn't live and has never lived at my address so I sent the bills back unopened. Unfortunately I didn't notice that I wasn't receiving any bills for me until quite some time later. To cut a long story short I'm now receiving bailiff letters from Scottish Power and I received a separate one today from Scotcall telling me my supply will be cut off unless I pay the outstanding balance which is now just over £500. Now I'll be honest before any of these letters arrived I did contact Scottish Power by letter on a number of occassions telling them my name and that i've been the account holder for over 12 years now, why am i receiving bills for this woman and where is my bill so I can make payment. I still haven't received a response from them. My mother then passed away just after christmas and left behind alot of problems and I also had to pay funeral expenses. I'm slowly coming to terms with it and the CCCS was good enough to give me another couple of months off my DMP because I was in arrears with council tax and rent which as of now I have settled. I'm emotionally drained and really just want to stick my head in the sand and hope that all my debts will disappear but I have to get real and deal with it. I thought I was coping until I came home to my disconnection letter today. Now I don't know what to do, I'm falling apart and feel like just ending it all. Life really isn't supposed to be like this. Please help me.

I'm sure helpful people will be here soon, to give you proper advice, for now just hang on in there.

If you really feel like ending it all - call the samaritans and tell them, if you don't feel you can tell anyone else.

Your signature looks good - you have been getting your debts down. I'm sure you can come to some arrangement with the electric co. Are they allowed to cut you off? Surely they will just put you on a prepayment meter at worst, and you will pay the arrears off gradually that way.

Good luck and you will come out the other side of this.

Sounds like you've been having an awful time of it. I can't offer much in the way of advice except to say keep your chin up, you seem to have made really good progress getting on top of things so far. You've taken control and dealt with each setback in a sensible way - you are doing really well! Don't forget how far you've come.
Is there a friend or family member you can confide in? You really need some emotional support as you are feeling so low. I'm sure lovely MSE folk will be along soon to offer you practical advice. I really hope things turn around for you soon.

  • I'm not really struggling with my DMP and budget at all but whenever I start to feel comfortable with it something awful happens to me. I just don't see any light at the end of the tunnel right now. There's so many things I've been doing to help my situation and I felt like I was really getting somewhere but it's just a huge mess. Maybe i just feel like it's too much right now because I've lost my mum.

I don't have an SOA at hand right now, but I do stick to it usually. I list lots of things on ebay and i've made a little bit of money from it so I will continue to do it. I've also put in 2 complaints to the FOS regarding bank charges I was reclaiming from RBS and Lloyds as I could prove financial hardship. I was also thinking about asking for all my CCA's and find out if the debts are enforceable but my motivation has gone right out the window. What can I do just to pick myself up again to get started? I thought I was doing so well.

  • I have highs and lows. Some days I'm like a bull and just charge everything head on and other days like today I just want to give up and take the easy way out. I'm sorry burdening everyone with my problems as I'm sure you've all got enough to deal with but I think this may be the only place where I can any understanding. My family have been great but they just don't get it, they've never been in the extent of debt i'm in.

Take a deep breath and make yourself a nice cup of tea first of all.
If I were you I would call Scottish Power in the morning and explain the situation, tell them the dates of the letters you sent them that they didn't respond to, if you can, at least then you've shown that you've been trying to establish communication with them. You may be able to set up some sort of affordable payment plan. I would talk to CCCS about it as well, they are there to fight your corner and they've been really good with you so far so I'm sure they will be able to help with this.
Like you said, you've been doing really well with your budgeting and you were feeling on top of things until recently. You will be able to get back in control again.
Don't panic. I'm sure things will look better in the morning.

  • dont appologise, we have all felt like this at some point, it is totally overwhelming x
i am so sorry about you mum x
when i have "those"days and i cant be arsed to deal with it all i write a list of the things i need to do
    ex-
send cca to all dca's (list them)
    do washing
    polish
    etc
when i can be arsed to face life i then go through that list and tick off the things i achieve no matter how small or insignifcant in the big scheme of things.
i get huge encouragement at the end of the day when i can look at it.
might sound cheesy lol but it works for me x and it gives me encouragement to keep me busy.
please dont bottle it up talk the samaritans are fantastic 08457 90 90 90
  • I did actually send them a letter last week recorded delivery with a copy of all the letters I've sent them, again they still haven't responded but I know they have received the letter. Is it worth giving them a call too? I'm not very good on the phone at the best of times but I'm scared I just turn into a blubbering mess.
