I am also a regular sufferer the only thing that helps ease the discomfort when I have an ulcer is Anbesol liquid or gel. I've tried Adcortyl in Orabase and that's good too. I've started having a Berocca effervescent tablet every day and that has definitely decreased the number of ulcers I get; when I stopped taking them over the school summer holidays I started getting ulcers reguarly again, so I'm back on them again.

I hope you find something that works for you - mouth ulcers are a misery

Propolis tincture is very good. Apply directly using a cotton bud. Its a natural product and sometimes has added alcohol so it might sting a bit but it worked for me :)
  • rescue remedy, aloe vera, pineapple tablets from H&B if fruit is too acidic, prescription toothpaste from dentist, maybe a gum guard if you have bruxism?l had to stop using bonjela as it wonks my acid indigestion!some homeopathic stuff is good but what works is vey individual;best to talk to a 'normal' doctor who is also a homeo-or natura- path.will try propolis myself,ta :-)

Tom's brand of toothpaste (available at H&B) contains propolis and both my parents swear by it. My dad used to get ulcers a lot but now has far fewer :)

Have you investigated your diet? A high intake of high energy foods such as nuts, chocolate, etc, can be one cause. "High energy" is the western term. If you look at various eastern cultures, there is the vaguely corresponding concept of "hot" foods, which include fruit such as the durian. The idea is that you avoid too much of them during times of coughs and ulcers.

Thus the antidote is to increase your intake of "cool" foods, such as oranges, etc, which has been mentioned with the pineapple.
  • Ta sofababe l'll investigate this one when l get to uk again,l go with my mum to get the thursday over 60's discount ;-)
maybe some kind soul who gets the H & B mag each month could post the moc details like the newspaper threads??
the prescription-from-the-dentist toothpaste is called duraphat btw.

Ty cattkitt;l haven't got a great diet but it was far far worse;l have fibro/cfs/whatever the doc agrees l've got this week LOL so between the meds an the stress my immune system now shouts help very quickly so there's a silver lining...

I don't know about Ayurvedic and not much about TCM except that they seem to dispense the same smelling herbs for everything! What interests me is seeing correlations for similar concepts across millennia and cultures. When the same idea comes up again and again, I like to know the reason why.
  • My homeopathic doctor in South Africa recommended Vitamin C tablets for me as she said I got them because I was stressed.

I wanted to post this lille bit of advice as I sometimes get ulcers and they drive me mad as I usually like to eat random foods like grapefruit (would love to know the origin of this craving!) and apples and etc which are impossible with any sort of ulcer!

My main gripe with gels and things to apply is that they never stay put! Just trying to get the bonjela/abesol/whatever else off my finger is a job in itself let alone getting it to stick or apply to the ulcer itself. I have found trying to dry off the ulcer with cotton wool balls helps the gels to stick but you really gotta be quick as the saliva ducts seem to see this as a race to outdo the cotton wool ball and replaces any soaked up saliva ASAP.

I think one of the main causes of mouth ulcers is being run down. So prevention is really important. A diet rich in fruit and vegetables is really helpful but alone is not enough (trust me, 5 a day is not even touching the volumes I eat and I still occasionally get them!). Sleep properly- not just the 7-9 hours required, but also without breaks if possible and if you find your having restless nights try to deal with whatever is making it hard for you to sleep properly weather that be talking about things that stress you out and keep you unable to relax fully or getting ear buds for noisy neighbours, eye patches for bright streetlights outside or simply catching up on nights where you were unable to sleep fully the next night (I read that if you lose an 8 hour nights sleep, you only need to catch up on 50% of this to rectify the problem, so an additional 4 hours the next night.) It does work-(for me anyway!) I have tried this.

I think stress also does play a part. I have my own theories on this (stress hormone cortisol is very acidic and can cause problems by destroying vitamins and meaning my body lacks its required nutrients to keep the immune system working- but this is my theory, it has no scientific basis what so ever as I am not a scientist!! It just works for me :)) So trying to deal with stress makes a big difference. I notice I get ulcers mainly when I am stressed or my body is more stressed then normal eg lack of sleep or the weather becoming very cold without being able to adjust to it in time or different exercise regime or a big change in what I eat (lack of fresh food) ..etc

Hope that helps someone! Its probably stuff you all know already but just wanted to share in case it helps.
  • My fiance washes his mouth out with salt water, yes it taste horrible but he edoes say it truely works as it cleans the area out:-) hope this helps just give it a try :-) or rubbing garlic on it is meant to work apparently :-)
