Virgin Media wireless router

Hello, was wondering if any fellow forumers could shed light on the following? We had BB, phone and cable TV with Virgin Media installed recently. However, the VM engineer said he did not have the wireless router with him and would be back.

Well, he did not materialise. When we called customer services, we were then told the wireless router would be sent through the post "in 1-2 days' time" and all we would need to do then is "connect it to the modem".

Has anyone had a similar experience? Is installing the wireless router easy enough? Or are we at the start of the VM Nightmare?:(

Installing the wireless router should be as simple as plugging in an ethernet cable from the cable modem to the wireless router, then log into your PC - look for nearby wireless networks, enter the WEP password (should be printed on the bottom of the wireless router) and away you go...

Things are often much more simple in theory though!

EDIT: Oops I forgot to mention you'll need to plug the wireless router into the mains too!

The installer only has to install the router if you get 50mb

That's normal - the VM engineer would not isntall the router.

When the router comes switch everything off - PC, modem etc. Connect the ethernet cable currently goes into your PC from the modem to the router. The connect another ethernet cable from the router (supplied) to your PC.

Switch on the modem first and wait for appropriate led lights to stabilise. Then siwtch on router and finally switch on PC. No need to run any installation CD.

Yup installation is pretty easy. Although keep on at virgin because people have been know to slip through the net and be left a while waiting for eqipment to turn up.
Don't forget to enable your security settings on your router - take a bit of time reading the manual on how to set up security (also I believe there are a few stickied posts in this techie forum on the subject too)

you may want to check with virgin media to see if the parcel despatcher has left it as someones elses address

My router was left at some ones address on my street who i do not even know without a calling card being posted through my door

luckily the person on my street was honest enough to knock my door and give it to me.

PS The parcel company was UPS

I'm selling my virgin wireless router if you need one, it is still packaged up as new and I can do it for £20 delivered.

If you ring them up they should send you one. They might ask you for another 12 month term though.
