I've just checked the Icesave website and it appears their rate is going up to 6.3% as of the 1st of October. I've had so many hoops to jump through with HiSAVE (certified copies of proof of identity and address, having to get them recertified because apparently the solicitor did it incorrectly, and now they will only take a cheque to do the initial deposit when I don't have a chequebook!) that I think I'll terminate my application and go with Icesave.

    Welcome to MSE

If you're quick, look into the 6.4% internet saver from Bradford & Bingley:

Full details are in the article :D

If you're looking for another internet savings account, I can certainly recommend Icesave, minimum balance £250 which, as you say, pays 6.3% AER before tax from next Monday. This account comes with a valuable interest rate guarantee.

Also Bradford & Bingley's Internet Saver which launched last Wednesday 19 September with a market-leading 6.4% AER.

Both are easy access online accounts with annual and monthly interest options. Quick and straightforward to open as well. Provided that you're on the electoral roll, both banks can check your ID electronically and cheques are not essential. You can make your initial deposit by direct debit from your current account, if you wish.
People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.
  • Why does Martin state that the B&B 6.4% savings account is a limited edition one? It looks like this is the new standard online savings account and is replacing the previous 'e-savings' range.
  • Just how big/secure are some of these smaller banks?

London Scottish Bank PLC have some competitive fixed rate savings accounts eg 6.76% over 3 years. Yesterday, I completed the form on their website for an application pack and shortly afterwards received an email from a Colin Evans which said the following:
"I will be out of the office on holiday from Wednesday 26th September returning to the office on Monday 1st October. I shall attend to your message upon my return."

Does the London Scottish Bank PLC's Savings Bonds department consist of one person? Looks very unprofessional to me whatever their excuse.
  • I doubt that there is one person, the application might have been forwarded to the wrong person! Still unprofessional though.

I get this image of a guy working in a basement somewhere using a 5yr old PC and a dot matrix printer....
  • Would this be the dot matrix printer which he shares with the guy who sits opposite in charge of Lending?

We know the rating agencies have done a pathetic job.

If anyone has a better idea of how "safe" various institutions are, please can they post on this thread:

I have recently opened an online savings account with Icesave, and was pleased to be able to transfer funds online from one account to another. :j

Just had an email from Icesave today informing me about the increase on 1st Oct.Hurrah!I found this account easy to set up and easy to use.I also like the monthly interest-so I can see how much I'm earning! Make a withdrawal on say Monday (before 11am) -or set it up in advance, and the money is in your current account on Wednesday morning. Vice versa for getting money INTO your savings. Only ever had one problem where I logged on and realised the withdrawal I had set up for the previous day had not happened-panic! -but phoned them up and they did a CHAPS transfer free of charge.Money was in current account the next day as expected.
