HTC Hero low usage tariff

I have spent hours and hours researching over the last 24 hours. I have followed to advice on this site and am avoiding the cash back, half price line rental redemptions. I currently have a lowly Nokia 6085 which I have had for nearly four years with PAYG with O2. I have eventually decided on the HTC Hero to replace it but don't need huge amounts of minutes or texts.

Using the moneysupermarket site I have found a deal with buymobilephones.net. They are offering the phone for £180 with a 36month contract with the orange 5 tariff which is £5 pcm. I have phoned orange themselves and they said I can add the bolt on internet access for another £5 pca ( and have ascertained that this bolt on can be taken off when ever I want, put back on etc) This would work out at a total of £10 per month (15 with bolt on) over the 3 years.

Orange did advise me to check out the t&c for the phone on the buymobilesphones website which I did and cant see any problems.

Can anyone advise me if this is a good deal (it appears I can also upgrade the phone through orange after 18 months)

The Orange deal total is £360 (£10/month) over the 36 month contract period or £540 (£15/month) with Internet add on. Looks fine if you don't mind being tied in for 3 years.

Vodafone through mobiles.co.uk do a 24 month contract at £15/month and £140 for the phone. This works out at £500 total contract price or £20.83 equivalent. This includes 75 mins, 250 txts and Unlimited internet.

If you really want Orange, then this deal might be better though bymobilephones.net. It's 24 months at £20/month and £70 for the phone. This works out at £550 total contract price or £22.92 equivalent. This includes 100 mins, Unlimited txts and Unlimited internet.

The advantage of the last two is that you can exit after 24 months rather than 36.

Thanks nickmack. I really dont mind being tied for 3 years. I'm only on my second phone as it is. I just was looking for confirmation that there wasn't anything glaringly wrong with this deal.

All the same I'm going to look more in depth at your two suggestions and think on it more. Orange and O2 are the two providers we get best coverage from here (central scotland). I've got to say I've not had any problems with O2 and would be happy to go with them again if I could find a similar deal to the orange one. There are enough orange users in the household as it is to allow me to make use of the orange wednesdays!

joyg: I know you've said that Orange and O2 get the best coverage in your area. It might be worth having a look seeing how the T-Mobile coverage is though. The G2 is the same phone as the HTC Hero, just T-Mobile have given it a different name for whatever reason.

This deal from buymobilephones is £419.99 over the 24 month period of the contract. £59.99 up front with a £15/mo contract with 300 mins + 300 texts + Unlimited (aka 1GB) of internet.

There's also £25 Quidco for buymobilephones.

Just some food for thought :)

Thanks Vatic: I've got OH to double check for me but t-mobile don't have that great a coverage here. Pity as that seems a wicked deal.

Just spoken to a friend who lives around the corner. He has a blackberry on t-mobile and the coverage is nearly non-existent at his house and even from the city centre in Glasgow it keeps cutting him off in the middle of phone calls.
  • The G2 (same as Hero) is

    £126 + £10/month for 24 months.

That gets you 100 mins + 100 texts + unlim internet + flex booster*

*you choose from things like unlim text, unlim calls to 01,02,03, etc.

I'm thinking of switching to the same contract in 1 month, but with a different phone, the Samsung Galaxy Portal (also android like Hero) and at only £71 for the phone.

    Darn, sorry to hear that!

  • Thanks for all your help guys. If we'd had decent coverage with t-mobile that looked like a great deal.

It eventually came down to the orange deal I had originally posted about and the vodafone one nickmack told me about. But I've gone for the orange.

    Very excited now!
