Non cable broadband......

Hi.

I need to know if anyone can recommend an isp that provides broadband via a phone line.

Main things to consider are;

No download limit if possible (as I generally watch streaming).

Any extra set-up costs, installation, modem, router etc.

Monthly cost (inc. any cashback deals)

Contract (prefer not to be tied down to 12 months if possible) and penalties for 'cancelling'.

Oh yeah, and of course the stability of the service, speed etc. (I don't do on-line gaming, so perhaps a stable 2-4mbs would be good enough).

Also, just as a general question. Is it possible to get non wireless these days? I used to prefer the extra security of plug in wires.

Thanks.

How about Be or O2? Can you get them?

Be offers 3-month contract options - but you do have to pay slightly more each month for this.

You're looking at £7.50 for the cheapest (includes unlimited usage on O2 - but you do need an O2 mobile phone number (can be PAYG).

    Or £17.88 for Be's Unlimited (£20.43 if you want a 3-month contract).

Alternatively, there is Plusnet - you can get the unlimited package for £15.99 - if you have LLU providers operating at your exchange, and they offer a contract-free option if you pay for set up (£30 I believe) upfront, and provide your own modem/router (you can buy one from them - but cheaper to buy one elsewhere, they cost from about £15).

Thanks for the replies. It seems that if you can get a good deal, then paying for a 12 month contract doesn't work out that much more than a much shorter contract. Especially if you can get the connection fee and router/equipment for free.

I was actually looking at o2. I'm an existing mobile customer so I'll get the discounted rate plus 2 months free. Also I read in a recent moneysaving expert email that I can get £70 cashback if I sign-up by the end of today through simplifydigital (http://www.simplifydigital.co.uk/o2/o2_broadband_cashback.aspx) effectively making it £6.66 a month :eek:. How unfortunate!!!
I've never done a cashback offer before. Is it really that simple??? It seems too good to be true. Surely there must be SOME catch???

Anyway, does this seem like a pretty good deal? I can only get a max 7meg d/l speed in my area, but with the cashback thing it will work out cheaper to go for the Premium (up to 20meg service) than the Standard (up to 10meg).

    Is it not £2.50pm?

    £10pm for 10 months - £100 minus £70 cashback = £30/12 = £2.50.

I can't comment on SimplifyDigital but I have used Quidco to sign up to O2 as have many others - no problem at all with cashback.

Are you actually on an O2 LLU exchange, if not you'll be on the dreaded O2 Access service-avoid at all costs.
What are your other LLU options?
https://www.samknows.com, then exchange search, 'LLU Operator Presence'
Impossible to give recommendations without knowing what exchange you are on-broadband is exchange specific.

Sorry. I've got no idea what that means. :(

I clicked on exchange search and then there was no option for LLU Operator Presence. Next page was a search box to put your phone no. or postcode into. So I'm still non the wiser.

Um. I was originally quoting from the Moneysavingexpert email so didn't do the calculation myself. But yeah, actually it should work out at £2.50 a month which is pretty good right, even though I won't get anywhere near their advertised top speed.

You need to go to the link and see if O2 LLU service is available in your area. Or even check on the O2 site what package they say you can get. LLU means that O2 have installed their own equipment into the exchange and can provide a better, faster and cheaper service. If they have not installed their own equipment they can offer you the Access service which still uses BT equipment and is therefore dearer and slower. The O2 Access service also has speed throttling as its traffic management and is really very poor.

The email may be quoting for a non-O2 customer.
