Council wont remove fire? Do they have to? safety?

Hi,

Just spoke to a guy at the council, as my 8 month old keep sticking stuff in the gas fire and got her hand caught in the grating last night.

The guy i was told to speak to wasnt thre, but this guy said they wouldn't remove it because if everyone wanted theirs removed it would cost them too much. He said i can get it removed myself? But i cant afford to pay for that at the moment.

I know of people that have had them removed before. Does anyone know if i can argue the matter x

  • A fire guard is what you need. And to supervise your (crawling??) baby so she can't 'stick things' in the fire!!!
  • Can you not beg, steal or borrow a fireguard until you decide which way to go.

I wouldn't think the council have any obligation since for every one who says they want the fire taken out, there'll be another who complains that the council ought to be putting a fire in.

I do supervise my non-crawling baby. But sometimes i do have hte call of nature. Or have to prepare food, msot of hte time she sits in the highchair but just this one time i went for a wee. (SORRY)

I've asked on freecycle will see what comes back, i have big pillows over the front of it at the moment!

£22 in Argos will get you a fireguard if Freecycle doesn't come up anything, which surely is worth paying for your child's safety. I realise you have debts but sometimes sorting out old debts has to be put on one side whilst you do what is urgent.

Are you taking the rise? My childrens safety is of upmost importance, here hence why i posted. Did you take your children to the toilet with you everytime you went. And yes she put things in the twice yesterday, the first and only time now it is covered over. And i rang the council to ask advice. Which is also why i posted here. Certainly not to be called a bad mother by someone who doesnt even know me.

I'm off to argos to get a fire guard thanks to others who offered support.

Yes, I did - every time- with all three of them - if there was no other adult in the room to watch the child. Why on earth would I risk my baby hurting herself? Being a parent is damn hard work!

I didn't call you a bad mother - I said you were responsible for your child's safety as you seem to be trying to blame the council for the fact that your baby plays with the gas fire??

Hope you manage to get your fireguard!

I wasnt blaming the council i was just asking whether it was their responsability or not because i know of others who have had it removed. I completely understand how much hard work it is being a parent. But i've never had to take mine to the toilet before. In fact none of mine touched the fire before my youngest and up until yesterday i didnt see it as a safety issue as we never use it. Thanks for offering your advice though.

if you dont use the fire and cannot afford a fireguard then place the sofa in front of it. (or some other obstruction).
re arrange the room, until you can sort the problem out.
    the childs safety is paramount.

I got a fireguard, I drilled two holes in wall, attached two large screws that have a ring in them and attached the fireguard to the two rings so it would be safe
