How to get money off when buying fruit and veg

I'll remember that I usually try to work out the lables but have found it difficult as the losse stuff tells you in kg and the preweighed stuff usualy tells you the weight of the produce itself and not for 100g.
Will stick to loose from now on.0 -
Yes I know what you mean tee pee, but sometimes they do put the price per 100grams/kilo as well for the prepackaged. Aren't they supposed to do it for all of them? Just remember to times by 10 when the crafty devils price the loose per kilo but price the packaged per 100 grams!!
But if in doubt, stick to loose! You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
I have to say loose is often best, mr t currently has brocolli on bogof, so every one thinks they are getting a bargain, 2 f0r 1.09 or there abouts, but the same sized loose costs a fraction of that at about 40p or so. so even when there are offers on, don't expect to get a bargain, unless it is reduced in addition to it being BOGOFThe sign of a wasted life is a tidy house, Welcome to the chaos!0

Don't you eat it? I just cut 1cm off because the ends are usually dried up a bit.
The thing to do is compare the prices as it varies. I frequently weigh prepacked stuff to compare with loose as they often price per item rather than by weight.tee_pee wrote:when in supermarkets I can never work out whether it is cheaper to buy preweighed or PYO. Any advice?0 -
I eat nearly all the leek too;)
I've found that pre-packed apples in supermarkets are nearly always more expensive than loose. But you do have to weigh them in order to compare prices. The unit price on prepacked stuff seems to be per apple, but on loose it's by weight.I think this is a deliberate tactic used by supermarkets. It's too much trouble for most people to work the difference out so they don't make it easy for us.You just assume a bag must be better value.0 -

I always find the very end bit a bit dry that's why I don't eat it. I also find it looses taste the greener it gets. My mum used to do it like this, could be that I might be wrong and just inherited a bad habit... Will try to eat it next time I get leeks and see if it tastes ok...0 -
Kazonline wrote:That made me chuckle churchmouse! Our local PYO wieghs the fruit you pick in the container - there are two container options, plastic punnet and fancy cardboard 'basket' with metal handle. I dread to think how much the later wieghs - and at £4 a kilo I'm not about to try it!
Rasberries etc were dearer again - it seems that PYO isn't the cheap option, or am I mistaken? (No you can't eat as you pick - lots of signs and allways an employee 'tending to the plants' nearby
Our local PYO weighs a similar container, zeros it with it on and only charges for the fruit.
Then of course adds x amount on for the container - but it's free to BYO.Tim0 -
don't forget to shake off the water when fruit and veg have been displayed outside, it weighs more...

Not really how to get more for yor money but how to get the best for your money....
I got a few dodgy looks on Saturday when i was shopping as i was smelling most things i bought. ! lady even asked me what i was doing.
I was smelling the things to see if they really smelt of what they were meant to.
Take the strawberries, i pick a nice box without any bruised ones then smell it to see if it really does smell of strawberries some dont and they inveriably dont taste as good. I do it alot with fruit and you tend to get better produce.
Celery is another one, I always do the sniff test.
People might think im mad, I know i am!!!
Oh and i pick the heaviest items when they are priced per item too! Oranges and lettuces are the bests for these.0
