How to get money off when buying fruit and veg

Hi,
I thought I would mention that there are ways to save a few pennies when shopping for veg if it's weighed. Simply reduce the weight of the veg you buy by ripping of the bits you don't use. It might seem like nothing but in the long run will save a bit.
1. Leeks: You can always rip off the top green bit, as that's never used for cooking
2. Carrots: You can rip off the top greens as well
Does anyone have any others tips to add? Would be greatly appreciated...
PS: Also, if you have rabbits. you can rip off the green bits from carrots in supermarkets and take it home for free. They won't charge you for it. And then feed it to the little ones...

Ok I know we aren't talking about supermarkets BUT when I buy my veg from one I DONT put it into a bag i did a test long time ago and a bag weighs about 1p worth!
As my old Nan says look after the pennies and the £'s look after themselves!!

The best way I have found to save money on fruit and veg is to build up a relationship with the stall holder. Mr Tesco doesn't add an extra piece of fruit or veg in 'for luck' nor does he offer me a particularly good price on something he managed to get from the wholesalers for me. Find a good fruit and veg seller, become a regular, and chat to them and before long you will be saving.True wealth lies in contentment - not cash. Dollydaydream 20060

the stalks on broccoli are edible and can be used for soup etc, a male shopper thought he would tell my elderly neighbour, who was buying broccoli, to take the stalk off, he went away with a flea in his ear:D0

I always shake off the loose soil of unwashed veg before I weigh it.My Doctor told me that "1 out of 3 people who start smoking will eventually die." The other two apparently became immortal.

Find a decent green grocer is my advice. When my dad was a green grocer, he used to constantly be in the back with a massive blade ( and me as a wide eyed kiddie watching through my hands!) slicing all the extra leaves, stalks and otherwise off things like broc, caulis etc as he knew no one would want to pay for them. He then used to sell the spare leaves and other rotting produce to a local pig farm :beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I remember a few years back on Tv, an old man would cut the excess of the veg in Tesco's, they band him from the shop. But I still do it, I wouldn't mined but have you seen the size of the storks on the broccoli these days:eek: .0

I'm all for people money-saving, but it can be taken to extremes!!
A good few years ago someone I knew went strawberry pick your own. She thought she'd put one over the farmer and hulled all the strawberries as she went along. At the checkout she declared she wasn't paying for green bits and if they didn't like it she wouldn't buy the strawberries. Apparently the worker laughed and said no you're OK.
Four really hot hours later she got home to unpack 5 lbs of beginning to rot strawbs! I think the farmer had the last laugh! So be careful what you discard. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0
