I’ve been looking at domain registration and web hosting, so did a search through the threads posted so far (thanks to all the people who’ve posted this info).
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35 has some additional discussion on this, but I haven’t trawled through it yet.
This is a summary of the cheapest based on what was posted and what I gleaned from websites. All of these seem to have relatively good feedback, though I don’t know as I haven’t used any of them so far.
I think it would be good to have this as a sticky – Board guides do you agree?

I have heard very bad things about this company - when I have asked friends about this subject, they have said stay away from 1&1.0
-
1and1 - hmm..
They say it's £1.99 per 2 years, but it's actually more. Go to Checkout and see!0 -

Hi m8
1and1 are good - I used them to register my domain name but the hosting isn't always cheap.
I am currently using a UK company called Penguin who I find to be very good and they give you a 1gb transfer limit per month which is more than enough for most people.
It only costs £10 per year too
Their site is - [SIZE=-1]www.penguin-uk.com

I am using 123-reg. Had no problems with them for the first year until I had to renew my hosting charge. They did not remind me by email when it was due to be renewed (unless my wife deleted it which is possible) so I was only advised after it had expired. This have to upload the whole site again onto their service which is a little irritating. To b honest 123-reg have been good and I am very satisfied with their hosting so far.0

Prices for .uk domains need to have VAT added and, as mentioned by fagun above, are always renewed for two years at at a time.
I took one out with 1&1 a couple of years ago, only to find that I was tied into their hosting package - there was no way to change the DNS pointers to use another host. (Their hosting isn't expensive but I already had hosting set up elsewhere so didn't need it.) Had to pay £5 to transfer the domain to 123-reg, whom I've been using for about 5 years now with no problems. Not sure if the situation is still the same - sounds like things have changed according to wackojackouk's experience - but if you don't want to be tied in to their hosting package, do check that you have full DNS control before you sign up!
For best prices, buy your .uk domain names from a UK supplier and your .com or .net ones from a US supplier. Not sure who's the most competitive on .eu names, but the cheapest I've found is https://www.fxdomains.com at .eu $14.75pa (also competitive for .com domains at $7.85pa).
And https://www.ipower.com now has a standard fee of $6.50 pa for .com and .net domain names - still very competitive.0 -
Have a look at Heart Internet0

it depends on what you need your webspace for... but i use streamline.net
comes with free .co.uk address, im on their unlimited account which provides unlimited web space and bandwidth, aswell as 5 mysql databases - that works out at £33 per year if you buy 2 years, or £45 a year otherwise.
their cheaper packages arent very competitive with other companies, but if you need unlimited bandwidth or web space, this was the best i could find.
Streamlines customer service is also excellent, since i'd never used database driven websites without direct access to the server before, i needed a bit of help, and they responded really quickly to all my questions

Microsoft has the best deal going at the moment. Their Office Live Basics gives free domain name, web hosting, email, calendar, IM, etc. They say its "free during and after beta" www.officelive.co.uk0
