Unfurnished Property - Curtains??

Hi All
I have just moved into a rented house. We took the property as unfurnished.
Upon arriving we have found that there are no curtains/blinds in any of the rooms and also no curtain rails.
I have always rented unfurnished properties and have always had curtains. Have I just been lucky in the past?

There were curtians up when we first viewed the house but there was another tennant living there at the time. We were not told that there wouldn't be any but, to be fair, we were not told that there would be either. I didn't ask as I think I just assumed that there would be as I have always had them before.

I just wondered if there is any obligation to provide these things as I find it unsual to have to start drilling holes in the walls (to put up rails) in a rented house.

I would appreciate any advice as I have searched the net and have found many conflicting answers. Some people seem to think that LL's have to provide a cooker, carpet and curtains but I'm not convinced about that.
Is it a bit of grey area?

Many thanks in advance.

No they are not obliged to provide anything. I've never had an unfurnished house that had curtains.

Thank you for your swift answer. Have your properties also had no curtain poles?
  • Ive just rented an unfurnished house and I am having to get new curtains and blinds fitted. I think when you rent an unfurnished place its just an empty shell.

  • The terms differ a lot between landlords some would put curtains in others wouldnt. Some see unfurnished as white goods only others see it as nothing.

I went to view a furnished house a while ago and it had 2x wardrobes and a sofa, no white goods or anything
  • Depending how long you're going to be there & how much you want to (not!) spend, you could get some telescopic curtain poles which fit in the window frame, and hang some lightweight curtains from these. I'm in an unfurnished flat (with small Georgian windows) and this is what we've done. I got mine in Wilkinsons and it's worked fine for 2 years.

You really need the written permission of the landlord to drill any holes. I think it's pretty mean of the landlord not to provide curtain poles or tracks, but quite normal not to provide curtains onn an unfurnished place. I have a telescopic curtain pole in my coat cupboard and it does the job as littlesnuggy says.

I did that in the last place I rented. It had curtains but no nets... I didn't want scallies to be able to judge from the roadside if I was in/out or if the curtains were open/closed. I got mine from the nearest curtain shop, cheap as chips ... and now I'll be carrying them with me everywhere in case I need them again.

There are no 'rules' about what should be provided. What matters is what is written in the inventory. I assume you were given one and that you and the LL signed it? Are curtains on the inventory?

Also blinds are becoming more popular anyway - simpler to clean and they give much better privacy.

They don't have to provide a fridge/washer/dryer/dishwasher/curtains. How you see the property is what you get. You can ask if the LL will be willing to put them up, but if they say no, you'll have to pay for it yourself. I'm unsure about the cooker tbh.
