Have you ever been asked for money?

I was wondering whether anyone had been asked for money from someone on this site. A lot of people have had money back (charges, PPI etc) and I wondered whether anyone had tried to tap you for money.

I've been asked for money by 'friends' I've met online (in chat rooms) - has this happened to you?

Nope, I've seen the odd thread containing the idea of setting up a fund to help certain posters.

I've sent vouchers to people before, but they didn't ask, I got in touch with them privately. The vouchers were of no use to me really so I was glad to help someone else out.

  • Errr .... no!

But I'm 50(ish) and maybe that has something to do with it????

Do NOT, ever, lend money. Just don't - especially to "friends" you've met online!

No - I think it's weird. Why would someone on the internet think you should give them money?

Anyone asking for money should probably be reported, especially if they are making a habit of it.

    Is it this site?

If so - report to abuse.

Edited to say: I've also donated stuff or money etc. to people on this site over the years - but only when a public thread was started for whatever reason and then I've personally offered. It's one thing to offer - another thing completely to be asked via personal message!

Nope - and I wouldn't even entertain the thought of doing it.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.
  • Me neither and I think any one that did would be booted off sharpish.

I agree with the other posters, I think it's a bit scary that complete strangers, or virtual friends to you, should be asking for money. It reminds me of those dodgy emails asking for money.

She probably feels she's earned it.

Not on here, but on a dating site.
She didn't ask outright but after a couple of weeks chatting and one meet i was given bleeding heart messages about how she had no money 'cos she had given up her job, they were going to cut off her phone and she hadn't enough to put in the gas meter and was cold; she'd crashed her car and couldn't afford to fix it; all her family and friends had turned against her, and she didn't know what to do; if she didn't get £250 by the weekend she was going to throw herself in the Mersey.
It was obvious what she wanted.
I told her don't do that at this time of the year, you'll freeze to death.
