Would you put this in your mystery shop report?

  • I'd be more interested in the fact the shop sold it to your friend with you by her side having already been refused sale.

To all intents and perposes you're aged 17 in their eyes, been refused (quite rightly imo) - you've then gone back in with an 'adult' who has bought the same alcohol.

This is quite a serious matter for the shop and should certainly be included within the report. I also think you should carry id at all times.

  • OP,

If you have to ask whether to put the incident in your report, then are you really sure you are up to mystery shopping as you seem to unclear about some of the basic principles of mystery shopping.

I hope I dont sound too rude, albeit a little blunt and straight to the point.
When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.

I was only asking to mainly get people's points of view and thoughts. I've been doing this for over 4 years, have never had any queries on my reports, whether it be errors, spelling or grammar mistakes and my reports are always detailed and constructive! Had it been a visit that specifically asked about this (e.g. the jobs that require a person underage to attempt to buy alcohol I would have put this in without a second thought). There is no direct question asking about this and at the end of my report it gives me 255 characters to describe my visit. This is not a big space to describe this. I have emailed the mystery company direct and tried to give a balanced view. Yes, it was positive I was asked for ID, but also that they way this was done was quite rude, and yes rightly, if they thought I was underage, why would they serve my friend who was with me?

It was more the way I was made to feel and the way I spoken too. Thank you all for your comments.
;29881855]I'm just doing the report, it's the company who has a limit on a word count so I am limited in what I can put in the report, however I am going to email the company separately. In 4 years mystery shopping I've never been refused, asked for ID, yes but they have always accepted my student card, and I've done this store lots of times, that said, I'm normally in my work suit!

Perhaps it is the Ugg's and ski jacket, must look like a teenager . . . it's quite funny now, but very embarrassing at the time. I felt like I was doing something wrong :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I'd watch with this, some MS companies (I know RE do) have a policy that any complaints should go through them. They can refuse to pay out for the job otherwise.

I would definetley include the information though.

I'm only 21 and when I was pregnant I never got ID'd. Now its back to being ID'd all the time :rotfl:

  • all this 'look under 21' or 'under 25?' malarkey (great word, i plan to adopt it..) is rather subjective..

When on hols in the USA, ALL age related products had to be checked against buyers ID- passport or drivers licence.. even if we were well over the minimum (age, not abv..!)

i suppose when ID cards come in (nooo!), just a thumbprint will suffice..? but by then the tech will be so advanced, they could deny service cos you probably exceeded your weekly allowance?

just a rant, i'll go away now..

  • If a member of staff is coming across as being very rude, you should make sure that you quote what it was he/she said and give a good description of the person. Management should at least get an idea of who it could have been that did this and will most likely track the attendance history to see who was in that day (they may not). Also bear in mind, usually the person above store level like an area manager may also get to see a copy of the report.

The fact that you may not have had valid ID is fine. If that supermarket requests specific forms of ID, then of course it is up to the customer to provide it. Your case is very unfortunate if you are 29 and being asked for ID. Despite you not having correct ID, it's fair enough for the member of staff not wanting to sell the alcohol to you, but it is another thing for him/her to be rude about it, even when you come back with a friend.

I work in retail and I personally don't agee with the idea of mystery shoppers. That is not me saying that I hate the people doing it, as many of them have kindly given me top scores in the past haha :) I can understand from a service point of view why it should be done, but sometimes comments have been made about myself or colleagues which don't express an understanding of the true situation within store. Of course this does not happen often, just once in a while, but staff end up shouldering the blame for something which was not their personal fault - just bad management from those who rarely venture out and serve on the shopfloor.

Going back to the situation of the OP, that must have been very awkward for you, especially with another member of the public getting involved. Hopefully you don't get that again.

My motivation for service is knowing that good service is always remembered. In the sense that a 'hello' is usually expressed by the same customer when he/she next returns and passes me in the store :) For this reason I ignore MS reports regarding myself be it good or bad.

Aggression. Rudeness. Possible criminal offence by a member of staff. They will want to know it all, that's for sure. Put it all in.
