Would you put this in your mystery shop report?

Just done a mystery shop at a supermarket. As part of the shop you have to buy alcohol using the self service till. This was flagged up of course and the staff member was quite rude. I was told I needed ID to prove I was over 18. I provided my student university card and my NUS card, both with DOB and picture on it but this was refused. Was told I needed a passport or driving licence (don't carry passport with me and just so happens I'm waiting for my new driving licence card to come through as it's that time when DVLA wants a new photo to replace it). When I said I had neither I was refused to be served. To make matters worse, another shopper had caught wind of this and looked at me in disgust and said "I think you are underage too", like a was some 'chav' trying to buy some Jacques to go and drink on a park bench! Had to go back to the car ask my friend to come in with me (incidentally, she is younger than me by 2 months) as I needed to buy alcohol and get a receipt for the purchase as part of the mystery shop. She bought it, and staff member was quite rude to her and did the whole "I hope she is paying for it as I can't serve you".

The frustrating thing about this is I am 29 in 3 weeks time!! The Aldi anti-wrinkle cream is working the :rotfl:

I know they have to do their job, but I was probably older than the staff member asking me :)

Put it all in. The whole point it to get a picture of how customers are treated & their feelings (I am from a retail background) not just a tick check of how the experience has gone

If this happened while you were carrying out an assignment, then 'yes' you do have to include it in your report. That's the whole point of mystery shopping.

If you think the staff was unreasonably rude then you should put this in your report. There was no need for rudeness!

Def agree put it all in, I once did a m-shop in a pub there was a massive slinging match going on for about 30mins, I'm all eyes and ears waiting for the landlady to come and sort it....... you wouldn't believe it,but it was the landlady and a member of staff........
    It was a good report.

But joking apart, those are the things they need to be aware off, if a business sent in one of their team, they'd be perfect as a m-shopper we give an independant birds eye view xx

I don't do mystery shopping but yes I'd put it in my report. This is why mystery shopping is here, to raise the standards of customer service and report bad customer service.

If you don't report it then you aren't doing your mystery shopping job, you're just another customer that's been treated rudely by this shop assistant.

Good luck with your other assignments.

Yes report it but ensure you do it objectively - facts only. You usually get the opportunity to put forward how you felt as a customer.

  • I'm just doing the report, it's the company who has a limit on a word count so I am limited in what I can put in the report, however I am going to email the company separately. In 4 years mystery shopping I've never been refused, asked for ID, yes but they have always accepted my student card, and I've done this store lots of times, that said, I'm normally in my work suit!

Perhaps it is the Ugg's and ski jacket, must look like a teenager . . . it's quite funny now, but very embarrassing at the time. I felt like I was doing something wrong :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
  • yes put it all in.......

Put it in, if they thought you were too young to buy alcohol they should not have sold it to your friend.

Search the forum, it's full or parents complaining the shop would not sell them alcohol because they had their 7 year old child with them.

You can't sell alcohol to some you thing is under age, but you also can't sell it to someone you know is over age, but might give it to someone who is under age.

In this case, you tried to buy alcohol and they refused because they thought you were under age. Then you brought in a friend to buy it for you, what did they think your friend was going to do with it?
  • Yeh geordie's right... they still sold it willingly to your friend knowing it was for you.

Also, I'm not a mystery shopper but I get asked for ID too and I'm 28. There is no excuse for rudeness... it's something that really grates me

Out of my mind. Back in five minutes.
