A barn conversion is very different to a log cabin.....a log cabin is a temporary structure and does not need any planning permission....it basically falls under the same laws as a garden shed. A barn conversion is a proper permenant residential building and must comply to buidling regs.
Your comment regarding the clearance the BI insisted on in your sons preoperty is an excellent case of BI's being clueless about the regs for solid fuel appliances.....the correct reg for a hearth witha closed appliance is 225mm in front of the firebox. It's only 300mm for an open fire.0 -
We were looking at a Westfire stove for our conservatory, we were looking at the Uniq 23.
The company we use for all our stoves and fireplaces seem to have the best prices for Westfire Wood Burning Stoves. Seems like they are a full 15% off RRP0 -

I wish I could have a pound for every time someone said this - I'd be very rich! There is no such thing as a temporary structure under planning legislation - a log cabin is development, a garden shed is development - exactly in the same way as a barn conversion. The only difference is that many sheds benefits from permitted development rights - that does not mean they do not need planning permission, as they do (all of them!). It means that planning permission is automatically granted under the permitted development legislation, subject to compliance with several criteria.
Building regs is completely different, but the advice re. planning permission is most definitely wrong!0 -
Ah, fair enough.......i must admit that i don't fully understand the situation with log cabins and planning permission but I do know that summers houses and log cabins and big sheds don't need to comply with building regs unless they have sleeping accomodation.
The info i relayed was from a friend who is building a log cabin and assumed the info to be correct.
Appolgies for the miss information and thanks for the correction. I'll stick to stoves:-)0
