ok, no service pack so i ran the windows update.

should i try again with the download?

Yes, but firstly make sure you run Windows Updates again, you should ensure you have it set to Auto Updates in the Control Panel, so you get all future updates automatically.
Vista SP1 was released as far back as Feb 2008, it's now up to SP2, so your system was at least 2 years out of date and wide open to security breaches. Check that you are now running SP2 and keep it up to date.

Keep running Updates until you are on Vista SP2. It may need more than one round of updates since you're so out of date.

  • ah, that explains it.

i ran the update and it said installing SP1. so i just keep doing it until it installs SP2 and then reboot and try the office install again?

Once SP1 is installed, reboot if requested. Then run Windows Updates again, download as necessary, and install. Reboot if requested.
Then try to install Office from your original saved file.
It should instal from SP1, but for security reasons you need to install SP2 anyway.
